Ukrainian esports coach Ivan Shevtsov (Johnta) has made a harsh statement about representatives of the Russian CS scene, accusing them of supporting the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation. Former professional CS players, including flamie and MrBandurka, publicly promote the Russian combat drone manufacturing plant Alabuga, an enterprise that works directly for the Russian war machine. Such actions are in fact recruiting young people into the ranks of the Russian military-industrial complex under the guise of esports content.

Shevtsov harshly criticized those who still defend the principle of “Russians outside politics” in esports: in his true opinion, the participation of well-known players in the promotion of Russian defense enterprises proves that this approach is naive and dangerous.

The activity of Russian players around the Alabuga SEZ is not limited to single posts. On the territory of this industrial hub, which has become a key center for the assembly of Shahed-type attack drones, eSports tournaments are regularly held. The organizers use the popularity of games such as Counter-Strike and Dota 2 to create an attractive image for the defense enterprise. The participation of media personalities, including former players from top organizations, in such events is directly aimed at recruiting college students and technical specialists to work on military projects under the guise of an “innovation cluster.”

In addition, evidence has emerged online that the Russian authorities have begun to officially integrate esports into the structure of the so-called “Games of the Future” and other patriotic movements, where the Alabuga plant is one of the technical partners. Professional players who agree to such cooperation receive not only fees but also loyalty from government agencies. This creates a dangerous precedent when esports opinion leaders become the face of militarization, and their audience, consisting mainly of teenagers, perceives work at a military plant as part of the “gaming culture”, ignoring the real purpose of the products manufactured there.

Similar cases have been reported in other areas of Russian esports, where organizations funded by sanctioned banks or state-owned corporations are increasingly holding events with military overtones. The use of esports players as soft power tools to legitimize the military-industrial complex is becoming a systemic phenomenon.

This once again proves the correctness of the Ukrainian community’s position on the complete isolation of Russian athletes from international competitions, as their public influence is directly converted into support for the military potential of the aggressor country and the recruitment of new personnel for weapons production.
