My current vehicle is a 2018 Mini One, which I briefly mentioned at the end of my previous article about my BMW iX2 road trip. This review is based on my experience using the VIOFO A329S with the front-facing and interior camera modules installed in that same Mini One, although I also tested the rear camera for a period.

One example that is particularly relevant to my own experience concerns Germany. Even on sections of the Autobahn without a mandatory speed limit, there is a recommended speed of 130 km/h (Richtgeschwindigkeit). Not every valuable recording is related to an accident. The road often presents unexpected moments worth preserving – a meteor streaking across the sky, an unusual incident, or simply a spectacular sunset during a scenic drive. With Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, the VIOFO A329S makes transferring recordings significantly more convenient. The reasoning largely comes down to German legislation and the strict requirements of the GDPR. Storing large amounts of continuous road footage can create legal risks. In practice, a dash cam is expected to operate in short loop-recording intervals, typically 1–3 minutes, with footage being permanently retained only when an incident triggers the G-sensor and the relevant clip is automatically protected from overwriting.

Failing to comply with these principles may complicate interactions with law enforcement or affect the admissibility of recorded footage. From this perspective, the included storage capacity is not a compromise but a practical and sufficient choice for everyday use on European roads. There are also strict restrictions on publishing photos or videos that clearly identify other people or display vehicle registration plates. For that reason, the sample videos I share do not include identifiable individuals or other road users, avoiding the need for extensive blurring, while license plates are obscured in all published photographs.

Design, appearance and ergonomics

The design of the VIOFO A329S is best described as functional and purpose-driven. There are no unnecessary decorative elements – every aspect of the construction is focused on efficient heat dissipation and long-term reliability. The wedge-shaped form factor allows the main unit to be mounted as close to the windshield as possible. It features a high-quality 2.8-inch HD LCD display and four physical control buttons with distinct tactile feedback, making them easy to locate by touch. The illuminated button indicators are particularly helpful when operating the device at night.

The real test of the A329S’s ergonomics, however, came during installation in my compact Mini One. The windshield in the Mini is not only relatively small but also has a notably upright angle, leaving limited space for additional equipment. In these conditions, every device mounted on the windshield has a noticeable impact on the driver’s field of view. As a result, visibility of some traffic lights is partially obstructed, as shown in the photo below.

The engineers and software developers have clearly put considerable effort into ensuring that the dash cam itself remains unobtrusive during everyday driving, despite its relatively large dimensions. In addition, the housing features numerous ventilation openings that efficiently dissipate heat generated by the powerful processor – an important design consideration for a device mounted against a windshield exposed to direct sunlight.

The cabin camera, however, presents a more nuanced picture. Its wide field of view is both an advantage and a limitation. In my case, the only practical mounting position is behind the rear-view mirror, between the headliner and the mirror housing. As a result, both the mirror and part of the roofline obstruct a noticeable portion of the camera’s view. It could be argued that the camera should have been installed exactly as shown in the manufacturer’s mounting guide. However, that placement would make the dash cam significantly less accessible from the driver’s seat, as it would be almost entirely concealed behind the rear-view mirror. It would also protrude further into the passenger’s field of view, making it a less practical solution in everyday use.

I would attribute this primarily to the constraints of a small vehicle rather than to a flaw in the dash cam itself. It is a characteristic of this type of form factor when installed in a compact car, not a design shortcoming specific to the A329S. In practice, any dash cam of similar size and layout would present much the same installation challenges under these conditions.

Software: Complete Control from Your Smartphone

A modern flagship dash cam would be difficult to imagine without a capable mobile companion app, and VIOFO has invested significant effort in this area. The official app is available for both Android and iOS, providing comprehensive access to the device’s features directly from a smartphone.

Thanks to the dash cam’s integrated Wi-Fi 6 module, pairing with a smartphone is virtually instantaneous on both Android and iOS. The available bandwidth is also sufficient for smooth handling of large 4K video files. The key capabilities of the mobile app include the following:

  • Live View: The app can display the live feed from any of the three cameras. This feature is particularly useful during initial installation or when adjusting the camera angles, as it provides an accurate real-time preview directly from the smartphone.
  • Intuitive file management: Recorded footage is automatically organized into separate categories, including regular loop recordings, parking mode clips, and protected event recordings saved either after a G-sensor trigger or by pressing the optional wireless remote button. Any clip can be downloaded to the smartphone within seconds.
  • Comprehensive recording settings: The app allows recording parameters to be configured without accessing the dash cam itself. Users can adjust the resolution for each camera independently, select the desired bitrate – from storage-efficient settings to maximum quality – and enable or disable HDR to improve recording performance in challenging lighting conditions.

Basic Installation: Simple on the Surface, with Hidden Pitfalls

If you are not planning to hardwire the system into the vehicle’s electrical system and instead opt for the standard cigarette lighter connection, the installation process appears remarkably straightforward. In fact, it takes only a few minutes: mount the cameras on the windshield, plug the power adapter into the 12 V socket, and route the long power cable behind the headliner and pillar trim using the supplied plastic trim tool.

It sounds like the perfect plug-and-play solution, but this apparent simplicity hides one of the most common installation mistakes – one that can have serious safety implications. The issue concerns the curtain airbags found in the front A-pillars of most modern vehicles. If the power cable or the rear camera cable is simply tucked behind the A-pillar trim without considering what lies underneath, there is a high chance that it will end up routed directly over the folded airbag.

Why does this matter? In the event of a serious collision, the curtain airbag must deploy within milliseconds. Any cable placed across its deployment path can interfere with that process. In the best-case scenario, the airbag may not deploy as intended, reducing its protective effectiveness. In the worst case, the force of deployment can turn the cable into a high-speed projectile inside the cabin.

The correct approach is straightforward but requires a little more care. Even when using the standard 12 V power adapter, the A-pillar trim should be carefully removed so the cable can be routed behind the airbag, as close as possible to the vehicle’s metal body. Ideally, it should be secured with cable ties to the factory wiring harness, which typically follows a safe routing path nearby. This not only results in a cleaner installation but also ensures that the vehicle’s passive safety systems can operate exactly as intended by the manufacturer. If you are not comfortable performing this type of installation, having it done by a professional is the safest option.

One final detail worth mentioning is the included 12 V power adapter. It is thoughtfully designed, providing power to the dash cam while also incorporating a USB Type-C port, allowing a smartphone or another compatible device to be charged at the same time.

Installation Considerations: What You Should Know About the HK6 Hardwire Kit

The HK6 Hardwire Kit is the only solution that fully unlocks the dash cam’s capabilities for around-the-clock vehicle surveillance, but its installation requires considerably more care than a standard power connection. Unlike a conventional 12 V adapter, the hardwire kit must be integrated directly into the vehicle’s electrical system. Installation involves connecting three separate wires to the vehicle’s fuse box. One wire connects to a constant 12 V power source, which remains energized even when the ignition is switched off. The second connects to an ACC circuit that becomes active only when the ignition is turned on or the Start/Stop button is pressed. The third wire is connected to the vehicle chassis to provide a ground connection.

Before proceeding with the installation, there are several important factors to consider.

  • Potential impact on the vehicle’s electronics: Modern vehicles rely on sophisticated electronic control units, CAN bus networks, and body control modules. An Ideal Addition to the System: VIOFO BP100 Battery Pack

If you want to take full advantage of the parking mode but your vehicle’s battery is already showing its age – as is the case with mine – or you simply prefer not to place additional strain on it during cold weather, a standard hardwire installation may not be the ideal solution. A conventional hardwire kit relies on a voltage cutoff (or a timer, depending on the selected configuration) to protect the vehicle’s battery, but this approach has its limitations. This is where the VIOFO BP100 comes into play. With a capacity of 7,650 mAh, this dedicated external battery pack is designed specifically to power the dash cam while the vehicle is parked, allowing parking mode to operate without drawing energy directly from the vehicle’s starter battery.

In essence, the BP100 is a dedicated, fully isolated power source for the dash cam. It recharges automatically while the vehicle is being driven, reaching a full charge in approximately 70 minutes when hardwired directly to the vehicle’s electrical system or about 100 minutes when powered through a standard 12 V socket. Once the engine is switched off, the dash cam draws power exclusively from the BP100, eliminating any load on the vehicle’s starter battery. Under a 3 W power draw with a single camera connected, a full charge can provide up to 32 hours of continuous parking mode operation.

The battery pack also includes integrated Bluetooth connectivity, allowing its charge level to be monitored in real time through the VIOFO mobile app. Comprehensive protection features are built in, including safeguards against overcharging, deep discharge, short circuits, and excessive temperatures.

Another practical feature is its dual-output design, which enables the BP100 to power the dash cam while simultaneously charging another device, such as a smartphone. For users who require even longer operating times, the system can be expanded by adding the optional EP100 extension battery. Together, they provide a comprehensive power solution for extended parking surveillance without placing any additional load on the vehicle’s electrical system.

Important Usage Considerations

It would be misleading to describe these as drawbacks. Instead, they are practical characteristics of the system that are worth understanding before making a purchase or installing the dash cam:

Visibility in Compact Cars

As mentioned several times throughout this review, I drive a Mini, where the windshield is relatively small to begin with. In a vehicle of this size, installing any additional equipment inevitably reduces the available field of view. Finding the optimal mounting position therefore requires some trial and error, with the most practical location typically being behind the rear-view mirror, where the dash cam remains unobtrusive without interfering with normal driving.

Rear Camera Installation in Hatchbacks

Because my Mini is a hatchback, the tailgate and the rear window open as a single unit. Mounting the rear camera directly to the glass means the connecting cable is repeatedly bent every time the tailgate is opened, which is unlikely to benefit its long-term durability. As a temporary experiment, I attached the rear camera to the fabric headliner instead, which remains stationary when the tailgate is opened. The result was admittedly far from elegant – the installation looked improvised and the adhesive mount was less secure on fabric than it would have been on glass. Nevertheless, the test demonstrated that this mounting approach is a viable alternative.

One design aspect of the VIOFO system deserves particular praise. The lenses on all camera modules, including both the main unit and the auxiliary cameras, can be easily adjusted vertically. As a result, regardless of where the camera is ultimately mounted, achieving the correct viewing angle takes only a few seconds.

EU Legislation (GDPR)

As mentioned earlier, dash cam usage is subject to strict privacy regulations in Germany, as well as in Austria, Switzerland, and several other European countries. Continuous recording of all surrounding traffic for extended periods is generally not considered acceptable, and publishing such footage without appropriate processing – particularly without anonymizing identifiable individuals and vehicle registration plates – can create legal issues. The dash cam should therefore be configured primarily for loop recording, using short video segments that are continuously overwritten. Footage should only be permanently retained when an incident occurs, for example, when the G-sensor detects a significant impact and automatically protects the relevant recording from deletion.

The Only Real Compromise: Device Size and the Laws of Physics

If there is one genuine drawback, it would be the desire for a more compact design – especially when considering installation in a vehicle like the Mini One with its limited windshield space. However, this is where the laws of physics come into play, and even the best marketing cannot change them.
