Almost four years after the debut of the Momentum 4 headphones, Sennheiser has finally introduced its successor. The new Momentum 5 Wireless have a very similar design to the previous model, so we can say that most of the changes have occurred inside the device. The company promises significant improvements in sound quality and active noise cancellation (ANC), although there are a few nuances in the characteristics. The main one is that Momentum 5 will cost $50 more than its predecessor.
Momentum 5 uses the same 42 mm drivers as Momentum 4. They are inspired by Sennheiser’s iconic HD 600 series of headphones and are tuned to deliver “full-bodied sound” and “dynamic bass.”.

The fifth-generation update includes Hi-Res Audio certification and Snapdragon Sound support. The latter provides support for Bluetooth codecs up to aptX Lossless. The proprietary Smart Control Plus application received an 8-band equalizer along with ready-made audio presets and sound personalization. Momentum 5 is also compatible with the BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter, which transmits lossless audio. The company introduced it late last year along with the HDB 630 headphones.
To further improve the sound quality, Sennheiser has already prepared an update to the digital audio processing of Bluetooth. After installing the “day one update”, users will receive Dolby Atmos support with head position tracking while listening to or watching compatible Dolby Atmos content. For now, the headphones support Dolby Atmos without head tracking.

Although Momentum 5 supports Bluetooth 5.4, the model is also designed for a future upgrade to Bluetooth 6.0. This feature will be available later, after a software update.

To improve the ANC mode, Sennheiser has added two more microphones on each side. Now each ear cup is equipped with four microphones. The company claims that this change will provide three times more effective muffling of human voices. The additional microphones should also provide a more natural sounding voice during calls.

One of the differences between Momentum 4 and Momentum 5 is the battery life. The previous model provided up to 60 hours of operation with ANC enabled, while the new model received up to 57 hours. However, the new generation supports fast charging, which allows you to get up to 3 hours of work after just five minutes of charging. Another nice option is that the 700 mAh battery can be replaced independently. To do this, the user only needs a small Phillips-head screwdriver.

Momentum 5 headphones will go on sale in mid-June and will cost $400. Sennheiser produces the model in three colors: black, white, and blue.
