Sony has begun to decisively purge the PlayStation catalog of low-quality games in an effort to clean up the digital store. The company is quickly removing the most problematic titles, but this does not solve the problem of low-quality games completely.

If you’ve ever browsed the PlayStation Store and noticed games with strangely familiar titles, characters, or graphics, but with cheap rehashes and little to no originality, Sony seems to have finally responded. Three publishers – GoGame Console Publisher, VRCForge Studios, and Welding Byte – have completely disappeared from the store. The removal was spotted on PSNProfiles and covered popular titles including Urban Driver Simulator, Water Blast Shooter – Wet Gun, and Supermarket CEO Simulator, according to EuroGamer.

“Cheatware, or low-quality games” is a general term for games created with minimal effort, which copy popular projects to capitalize on their popularity, or are designed to get achievements or trophies easily. These are cheap clones of popular games that get into the PlayStation Store through a relatively open content submission process.

To make the digital store more convenient for PlayStation users, the latest update removed a number of such games. Interestingly, this is the third such wave of purges in 2026. In January, the fourth largest publisher with more than a thousand projects was completely removed, followed by CHI Laba and Nostra Games in March. The April purge came less than two weeks after the March wave.

These measures are partly due to the Shared Commitment to Safer Gaming initiative, a joint project of Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo. The support of other major companies gives the latest crackdown more weight than previous isolated measures.

However, in practice, the problem still exists. Sony is still acting reactively, removing only those games that have received complaints, instead of pre-screening and weeding out low-quality content before it appears in the store. In addition, banned games often appear under different names.

Until the standards for content presentation are tightened, it will be difficult for the company to fully control the situation. In the author’s opinion, Sony should move from reactive removal to proactive moderatorial control to break this cycle. Nevertheless, the latest takedown is commendable.
