Steven Spielberg, although famous for films that scared audiences, such as Jaws and Jurassic Park, admitted that he still dreams of making a real horror movie. Even if he didn’t direct Poltergeist – that role was played by Toby Hooper – Spielberg was a producer, story writer, and co-screenwriter. Fifty years of creative career in frightening genres did not diminish his desire to one day lead a horror project.

In a conversation with Empire, Spielberg explained why he hasn’t yet taken on a full-fledged horror movie. “I haven’t made a horror movie yet, but I’ve always wanted to. And maybe someday it will happen,” he said. “But there are already great horror movies that fulfill that need.”

He named Weapons, directed by Zack Kregger, as one of them. “When I see a great horror movie like Weapons, I don’t feel like doing something as scary or even scarier. This movie satisfies me so much that it extinguishes my desire to make a really horrible movie one day,” Spielberg explained.

His latest alien film, Disclosure Day, will be released on June 12, and he has no similar desire to postpone his work in the science fiction genre when other authors’ outstanding works appear. For example, he admires Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films and believes that they “respect” Frank Herbert’s books, which he also loves.

Jaws

“These are some of my favorite science fiction films, not only recently, but throughout history. Especially the second part,” said Spielberg. “I think [Dune 2] is the best movie Danny has ever made. I can’t wait for the third part.” The opportunities to have privileges like Spielberg’s are obvious. “Dune 3 won’t be released until December, but “I’m sure he’ll show it to me before then. I’m a big fan of his work,” the director said.
