The 8849 brand, a sub-brand of the well-known Unihertz company, has announced its new secure mobile device called Tank 5. This new product continues the brand concept of the line and offers users impressive battery life, significant performance, extensive functionality, and an integrated DLP projector.
The latter provides a brightness of 220 lumens and has a 2K resolution. The projector’s optical system is additionally equipped with automatic focusing technology thanks to a built-in laser rangefinder that works at a distance of up to 4 m, as well as a four-point keystone correction system using a ToF sensor both vertically and horizontally. An interesting feature is the dedicated Type-C DP “IN” input interface, which allows the gadget to be used as an external monitor or projection screen.
Inside the device is a 17600 mAh lithium-polymer battery that supports 120W fast energy recovery technology. The battery pack is designed for a nominal voltage of 7.74 V and a maximum voltage of 8.90 V. Users can also share the charge with other devices via a high-speed Type-C 3.1 port that provides reverse wired charging with a power of 5V – 25W, while wireless power transfer is not implemented in this smartphone.
All this stuffing, together with the IP68-rated protective case that protects against dust and water, resulted in dimensions of 177.1 × 87 × 33.8 mm with a device weight of 715 g. The hardware architecture is based on a double-sided motherboard with a modern 4-nanometer sub-flagship Mediatek Dimensity 9400e processor (technical marking MT6989T-e) as the key node. Its computing structure consists of one ultra-powerful 3.4 GHz Cortex-X4 core with 1 MB of second-level cache, three additional 2.85 GHz Cortex-X4 cores with 512 KB of L2 cache, and four energy-efficient Cortex-A720 cores operating at 2.0 GHz with 256 KB of L2 cache. The graphic component is provided by the Immortalis-G720 MC12 processor, thanks to which the gadget easily demonstrates indicators in the region of 2 million points in the popular AnTuTu benchmark.
The smartphone is equipped with fast 18 GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB UFS 4.0 storage. Owners can expand the internal space with a MicroSD card up to 2 TB thanks to a combined tray for two nano-SIM and TF cards with hot-swap support. The front panel features the 6.73-inch AMOLED display known from previous generations with a resolution of 1440×3200 pixels. This matrix supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz, recognizes gesture control when the screen is turned off, and is capable of reaching a peak local brightness of 3000 nits. A 32-megapixel front-facing camera with fixed focus is provided for taking selfies.
The rear side of the device is equipped with a triple photo module, where each sensor has a resolution of 50 megapixels. The main sensor is Samsung S5KGN1SP with autofocus, which should not be confused with the simpler JN1. It is assisted by a telephoto lens with optical zoom and autofocus, as well as a special night vision camera that works in conjunction with four infrared illumination sources at a wavelength of 940 nm, which allows you to see objects at a distance of more than 15 meters. The main flash has a maximum current of 1.5 A and supports color temperature control. Also on the rear panel are a powerful camping flashlight and an additional light element for signaling with red, blue and RGB diodes. The set of physical controls consists of a power button, volume control, and two programmable PTT buttons. For biometric protection, a fingerprint scanner integrated into the side edge is used, but without support for fingerprint-based payment systems.
The sound subsystem is represented by AWINIC Smart PA stereo speakers based on an 1115W emitter with a full-fledged 3.5 cubic cm sound chamber (impedance 6 Ohms, power 1.7 W, volume 96 dB), which is supplemented by a separate audio amplifier channel. The 0809 speaker has a waterproof design, and voice transmission is carried out through two analog silicon microphones with noise reduction algorithms. Tactile feedback is realized with the help of a flat vibration motor type 1027. The set of sensors includes a hardware gyroscope, accelerometer, digital compass, barometer, as well as proximity and ambient light sensors.
The model’s wireless communications include a modern Wi-Fi 7 module (supporting 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards, 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, Hotspot V2.0 and MIMO technologies), Bluetooth 5.4, eSIM technology, and an NFC module on a Unisoc THN31 chip that operates in card reading, writing, and emulation modes in accordance with ISO/IEC 14443A/B, ISO/IEC 15693, and EMVCo and NFC Forum certifications.
Navigation capabilities are provided by a dual-frequency GPS receiver (L1+L5) with support for Glonass, Galileo, and Beidou satellite systems, but the device does not have a built-in FM radio. The smartphone is equipped with an infrared port for controlling equipment, a classic 3.5 mm audio jack, and a multifunctional USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C connector that supports DP “OUT” 1.4 video output. The modem part supports cellular networks of the second (EDGE/GPRS Class 12), third (HSDPA up to 42.2 Mbps, HSUPA up to 11.5 Mbps), fourth (download speed up to 1.6 Gbps, upload speed up to 315 Mbps) and fifth generations of 5G NR (with up to 2.34 Gbps for data reception and up to 2.5 Gbps for data download). All this rich arsenal runs on the latest Android 16 operating system.
The manufacturer is keeping the official price of 8849 Tank 5 a secret for now, but retail sales are scheduled to start in the coming weeks.
