Xiaomi is expanding its lineup of home appliances sold under the Mijia brand. The company has unveiled a compact ice maker, which is already available through a crowdfunding campaign for 359 yuan, or about $53.

The device is indeed very compact: it takes up about as much space on a surface as a sheet of A4 paper and weighs 6.1 kg, so it can be placed on a kitchen countertop or in an office break room. The ice maker consumes only 110 W and can be powered by a car inverter, so you can easily take it with you on a camping trip.

The most interesting part begins with the ice-making process itself. There are two modes: Quick Ice and Standard Ice. In Quick Ice mode, the device produces eight ice cubes in 6–8 minutes. Standard Ice mode is slower, but the cubes come out clearer and denser. Xiaomi claims that the denser ice melts in 300 ml of water in about seven minutes. This is important if you’re making cold brew or a full-fledged cocktail and don’t want your drink to be watered down after just a couple of minutes.

The removable ice tray has a capacity of 0.75 L, the water reservoir holds 1 L, and the maximum output is up to 13 kg of ice per day. It features a built-in UV lamp and a five-minute self-cleaning cycle. The scheduling function allows you to delay ice production by three, five, or eight hours.

Essentially, this is a small kitchen appliance that incorporates smart home technology. UV sterilization, a self-cleaning cycle, delayed scheduling, and a transparent window that lets you check the ice level without opening the lid – none of these features is revolutionary on its own, but taken together, they give the impression of a well-thought-out device, rather than just a collection of marketing gimmicks.

For now, Xiaomi’s Mijia ice maker is raising funds through crowdfunding, but regular sales will begin on August 17.
