Since the next generation of Ford electric pickups is set to debut in 2027, the F-150 Lightning is no longer available. As a result, Ford is already preparing to introduce the $30,000 Fathom electric pickup and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) to replace it.
The electric vehicle’s page on Ford’s website now states that the pickup is transforming. “The F-150 Lightning redefined what a truck could be. While it’s no longer available in its current form, its impact is helping shape what’s next. Stay tuned for a new wave of Ford EVs built on our groundbreaking Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform,” the manufacturer notes.
In December, Ford discontinued production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning, which was once the best-selling electric pickup truck in America. It remained on sale for several months, but the vehicle is no longer officially available on the company’s website.

The first of the promised new models will be the all-electric Fathom pickup, which will go on sale in early 2027 with a starting price of $28,350. This amount does not include a $1,595 delivery fee, but even with this additional charge, the electric vehicle’s price will still start at less than $30,000. This refers to the model with the standard range.
As the first vehicle based on the “innovative” UEV platform, the Fathom, according to Ford’s promise, will be a significant step forward compared to the F-150 Lightning in terms of efficiency and, importantly for the company, profitability. The automaker also states that the Fathom will have more interior space than the Toyota RAV4 and will be the first vehicle to feature Apple Maps directly integrated into its navigation system. Production is scheduled to begin at the Ford Louisville Assembly Plant in early 2027.

The Fathom won’t be a direct replacement for the F-150 Lightning, as it’s a midsize electric pickup that some might consider small. But the company already has plans to replace the F-150 Lightning, and to do so, it plans to release an electric vehicle with an extended range. It will feature a gasoline-powered generator which, according to Ford, will provide a total range of over 1,120 km and “run on electric power alone 90% of the time.”
Ford has not yet revealed the final specifications for any of these pickups, but with their debuts approaching, more details will likely be available soon.

Of course, the company won’t leave current F-150 Lightning owners in the lurch and promises to provide ongoing software updates, service and repair support, as well as real-time assistance.
