Ford has revealed the name of its affordable midsize electric pickup truck. The new model is called the Fathom, and its starting price will be just $28,350. The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform. Sales of the model will begin in early 2027.

Ford reported that the estimated price for the standard version with a base range will be just $28,350, excluding the $1,595 delivery fee. The company explained that the name Fathom was chosen for its meaning, not as a random combination of letters. The word “Fathom” means “to penetrate to the core and understand” possibilities that were previously considered unattainable. According to Ford, this is exactly what the engineers had to do to create this midsize electric pickup truck.
Although the model will compete at the very heart of the affordable electric vehicle segment with a starting price of around $30,000, Ford emphasizes that price is the least interesting feature of the new model. The pickup will be “high-tech” and “fun to drive,” and it will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4 – not to mention the cargo bed and front trunk.

All trim levels will feature a large, high-resolution touchscreen display, wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the BlueCruise system, bidirectional charging, and a digital key. The Fathom will be the first vehicle to come with Apple Maps built-in. The system will provide turn-by-turn navigation using real-time data, EV-optimized routing, battery preconditioning, and other features directly through the navigation display.
Ford will also use Apple Maps road data to enhance its BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology, ensuring “a smoother ride from the moment you enter the highway until you exit it.”

Ahead of its official debut, the upcoming Ford Fathom has already been spotted multiple times during road tests. Last month, two camouflaged prototypes were photographed near a Tesla Supercharger station. The electric pickup will feature a built-in NACS port. Ford has not yet disclosed the battery specifications, but the Fathom is expected to deliver a range of at least 480 km thanks to the company’s meticulous work on aerodynamics and efficiency.
The company is also streamlining the manufacturing process using methods such as megacasting. Additionally, Ford will use prismatic LFP batteries supplied from the BlueOval Battery Park facility in Michigan to reduce costs and maximize interior space.
