It fits easily into a small jeans pocket and doesn’t weigh down the smartphone during extended shooting sessions.
But the real “magic” comes from the built-in magnets. The drive supports the MagSafe ecosystem, instantly attaching to the back of my iPhone 17 Pro. Over a month of use, I found the magnet holds securely even through Apple’s original silicone and leather cases. For third-party cases without magnetic compatibility, Orico thoughtfully includes a metal ring with an adhesive backing.

Performance and Experience with Blackmagic Cam
In typical use, the drive delivers consistent read and write speeds of 410–435 MB/s. This makes it an ideal tool for:

- Mobile media library: Watch videos in their original quality via the Files app without consuming any iPhone storage.
Professional app workflows. The drive proved to be a very reliable solution when working with the Blackmagic Cam app on iOS. In standard recording modes (H.264/H.265), everything runs smoothly. You simply select the external drive in the settings, and your footage is recorded directly to the SSD, saving time on subsequent export.
Extreme Tests: “Sprint” vs. “Marathon”
To assess performance objectively, the Orico K5 Mini underwent a true “obstacle course.”
- Sprint: Short write operations ran at maximum speed. Copying photo folders was almost instantaneous.
- Marathon: During prolonged continuous recording of large files, speeds dropped to 20–30 MB/s after the SLC cache was filled. This is typical behavior for compact SSDs. Even tests at –3 °C showed that once a certain data volume is reached, the controller limits speed to prevent overheating.
During a month-long test on the iPhone 17 Pro, I pushed the Orico K5 Mini to its limits with Apple ProRes LOG recording. This extreme workload occasionally caused frame drops. It’s important to put things in perspective: the K5 Mini is a perfect lifestyle accessory for 99% of a content creator’s tasks. For “Hollywood-level” filming with massive bitrates, we’ll need to wait for the higher-end model of the line, boasting 1000 MB/s speeds and Power Delivery (PD) support.
It is worth noting that the maximum recording duration for different formats is displayed at the top. This is an important point for understanding that high-resolution formats such as LOG and HDR require more than a 500 GB drive.
Additionally, I conducted stress testing on the disk using BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, running it continuously for several hours. I captured several screenshots to illustrate the limitations of this module under prolonged workloads. These images show the gradual change in performance – from the initial load, which indicates the formats the disk can support for reading and writing, to the results after extended stress, where fewer formats remain supported. From this, a provisional conclusion can be drawn: the device is suitable for backup purposes and for moderately fast data transfer, but it is not optimized for sustained high-intensity workloads or highly demanding applications.
Reliability and Brand Legacy
Orico has been a consistent presence in the storage peripherals market for several years. Their transparent HDD/SSD enclosures have become a standard design. The K5 Mini reflects a similar approach to reliability: the included cable is of solid quality, the connector fits securely, and the aluminum body functions as an effective heat sink. Even under warm operating conditions, the drive appears well protected.
As a brief anecdote, prior to the New Year, I used an Orico SSD in a rugged Getac laptop. So far, the owner has reported no issues, despite the drive being a 128 GB model purchased for 20 euros. Current market conditions have increased the price of this same drive to around 80 euros, highlighting ongoing challenges in the components industry.
