A laptop stand has always been an essential accessory for me – whether to reduce wrist strain, raise the laptop screen, or align it with an external display. But over time, I realized that portability mattered just as much as ergonomics, if not more.

For the past five years, my stand of choice was the IKEA Isberget. Not because it was particularly functional or good-looking – it was simply the cheapest option I could find in an IKEA store in Kyiv, and it kind of stuck with me. It survived three job changes, three countries, and countless small and big moves.

But every time, it was me adapting to the stand: grabbing a bigger backpack so it would fit, rearranging my desk to make space for it, lowering my monitor to line it up perfectly with the laptop screen.

So when Orico reached out to test their new Portable Laptop Stand – Orico PN-1, I was genuinely curious. Could it finally solve my three main requirements for a portable stand: portability, flexibility, and value?

Portability

Size has always been my biggest concern with laptop stands. It shouldn’t take up much space in a backpack or on a desk, yet it still needs to hold whatever device I throw on it.

Orico’s portable stand handles this surprisingly well. When folded, it’s under six inches long – slightly longer than my Leatherman Rev, while almost the same width and thickness. Small enough to fit into any backpack or laptop sling: if your laptop fits, the stand will too. A microfiber pouch makes it even easier to toss into an everyday carry bag without worrying about scratches.

Fully unfolded, the stand forms an X-shape with a compact footprint – roughly 9×9 inches. It fits comfortably on my relatively small desk, already occupied by a PC, monitor, full-size keyboard, and mouse. That makes it easy to run a dual-screen setup with my 13-inch MacBook Air without feeling cramped.

Flexibility

While my personal device collection doesn’t include a laptop larger than 13 inches, Orico claims the stand can support devices up to 17 inches. From my testing with 16-, 17-, and even 18-inch laptops, 16 inches feels like the practical upper limit, as larger laptops can tip over when typing on the top row of the keyboard.

The stand isn’t limited to laptops either. Thanks to a flexible center hinge and adjustable legs, it can be used with smartphones and tablets, with the height and angle adjusted accordingly.

For laptops, there are five height levels, secured by spring-loaded standoffs that click smoothly into place. For tablets and phones, height and incline are adjusted via the hinge. Across all modes and devices, the stand feels extremely sturdy. I even tried placing my keyboard on it, and to my surprise, it didn’t wobble, even when pressing near the edges.

The same applies to laptops and tablets: no shake, even when typing at maximum height. Just make sure the surface underneath is even; otherwise, even larger stands can wobble. Overall: good job, Orico.

My only real complaint is phone mode. In that configuration, the stand feels bulky and takes up more space than necessary. With MagSafe-based solutions on the market offering more flexibility while taking up almost no space, it’s clear that smartphone use isn’t the primary purpose here. Still, it’s a nice extra, especially if you already need the stand for other devices.

Value & Pricing

While the Orico stand is clearly more portable and flexible than the IKEA Isberget, price was one of the main reasons I originally went with IKEA. Five dollars for a piece of plastic felt reasonable at the time.

Orico’s stand, however, is anything but plastic. It’s made of aluminum, features durable hinges and springs, offers extensive adjustability, and comes in a compact form factor. Orico lists it at $35.99, with a 15% discount code (ORICOPN1) bringing the price down to $30.60 before shipping and taxes. At the time of writing, only the silver version is available, but Orico confirmed that a dark gray option and an Amazon US listing are coming soon.

Is that a fair price? Established brands like Targus used to price portable laptop stands starting at around $29.99, often with bulkier designs and fewer adjustment options. On Amazon, you’ll find countless plastic knock-offs for under $10. Against that backdrop, Orico’s stand positions itself as a more premium, flexible, and robust solution. Not cheap, but you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Does it deserve a place in my EDC?

While it costs more than the average no-name Amazon stand, Orico’s Portable Laptop Stand delivers a thoughtful design, premium materials, and excellent portability – all while taking up almost no space in everyday carry.

For the first time, it’s the laptop stand adapting to my scenario, not the other way around. And for that reason alone, I’m more than ready to retire my IKEA Isberget and replace it with the Orico PN-1 in my laptop sling.
