The Age of Empires series has been experiencing a true revival in recent years under Microsoft. It has seen several re-releases in the form of the Definitive Edition, a successful sequel, and the return of Age of Mythology. One such game was Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition; however, support for it ended in January 2025, and with that, the previously announced major DLC was canceled.

However, despite the sweeping changes at Xbox – which include downsizing entire teams, revising development strategies for individual franchises, and reassigning rights – an official announcement has been made: support for Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is returning. The developers have announced that work on The Baltic Powers expansion is ongoing. It will add two new civilizations, over 25 new maps, new challenge scenarios, game modes, and over 50 hero customization options. “More importantly, it’s built around what Age III fans value most: new strategic challenges to tackle, new tactics to master, new ways to explore the map, and new reasons to return to their favorite game,” say team representatives.

The Danes and Poles will be the new civilizations. The Danes will focus on controlling the seas and multi-layered defense, while the Poles will rely on rapid economic development thanks to reduced construction costs.

“In the ‘Commonwealth Charge’ scenario, defend the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from relentless invaders. Capture neighboring villages, increase your resources and population, and time the attacks of your winged hussars correctly to withstand the frenzied pressure,” says the studio, describing the new challenge scenarios. “In the ‘Havana Heat’ scenario, lead a desperate Spanish defense against the British offensive. In a race against time, inflict 1,000 casualties while defending the city center, and capture key beaches before enemy artillery begins firing.”

The expansion also introduces two new game modes. “Regicide mode raises the stakes from the very first minutes: eliminate the enemy regent – and you win instantly! Since the regent cannot hide in buildings, every decision regarding reconnaissance, defense, pursuit, and timing becomes even more dangerous,” the developers add. – Independence mode strips you of your home city’s protective support network and challenges you to secure victory through strategy, basic skills, and mastery on the battlefield.”
The Baltic Powers expansion for Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition will be released on September 10, 2026. Meanwhile, an open beta test has already begun for owners of the game on Steam, allowing them to try out the new update and content.
