EA is ramping up its marketing campaign for Battlefield 6 just as the game’s fourth season is gaining momentum. With less than a week to go before the release of the second Season 4 content update, the company has announced that, to mark the occasion, the base game will once again be free for a limited time.

The free access promotion will begin on the very same day that the second phase of Season 4 kicks off. This latest update will build on previous ones – including the game’s largest map to date and naval gameplay – and will bring back the iconic Wake Island map, as well as add Top Gun-themed elements.

The previously announced crossover with Top Gun has also received a brand-new trailer, featuring several recognizable faces and voices from the movie Top Gun: Maverick.

In the main game, the Carrier Strike mode will focus heavily on jet fighter combat, as two teams attempt to destroy each other’s aircraft carrier bases. In the 64-player mode, there are several ways to secure victory, including damaging the aircraft carrier or blowing up the M-COM. Players who have been playing Battlefield for a long time and remember the Titan mode should be familiar with this concept.

The aircraft carrier can be damaged by direct fire from heavy weapons – such as aircraft, tanks, or launchers used by soldiers – as well as by SSM batteries scattered across the vast map. These launchers are activated once players capture the corresponding positions.

“Everything about Top Gun is a perfect fit for Battlefield, so in many ways, this is a dream come true,” said gameplay designer Steve Cheverie. “I’m incredibly proud of the team that brought these characters to life in our world. In Season 4, we’re heading to the Danger Zone, and we hope you’ll join us!”

In REDSEC, the Top Gun crossover takes the form of an all-new mode dedicated exclusively to jet fighters. It’s called Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep. In this mode, the F-74A Seacat and F/A-81F Super Spectre will compete against each other over the Tsuru Reef map. Six squads of two players each will participate in 10-minute matches.

Free access to the Battlefield 6 trial begins on August 18 and runs through August 25. The core game content offered as part of the trial will be accessible via the free Battlefield REDSEC client during the event, so interested players should keep it installed and up to date.
