It’s been a while since it became known that BioWare joined forces with Prime Video to create a series based on the Mass Effect universe. Now, it is reported that the project is close to getting the green light, but some changes need to be made to it first. And these changes have already raised questions.

According to The Ankler, Amazon ‘s head of television Peter Friedlander insists on reading the scripts of all projects in development before allowing them to move to production. In the case of Mass Effect, he reportedly demanded that the script be reworked to make it more understandable and appealing to people who don’t play video games.

Mass Effect

At first glance, such a requirement seems somewhat strange, as the original series of games was originally aimed at a wide audience. It combines elements of science fiction in the style of Star Trek and Star Wars and has never hidden it.

At the same time, it remains unclear what exactly is meant by the phrase “more appealing to non-gamers”. Which elements seemed too complicated or “off-putting” for the management, whether it was about individual scenes or the overall structure, and how widely this problem manifested itself in the scenarios – these questions remain unanswered. It is possible that the details will become known later, but for now there is a lack of specifics.

Mass Effect

It is worth noting that the Mass Effect series is not the only case when adaptations are being made to make them more accessible to a wider audience. Sometimes such changes do not affect perception, and sometimes they cause controversy, but simplifying and smoothing out complex elements has long been a common practice for adaptations.

At the moment, we can only wait to see when the project will reach the implementation stage, if at all, and evaluate the result after the series is released. Since the release, even if successful, is still a long way off, those who are not familiar with the franchise may have time to familiarize themselves with the four games in the Mass Effect series.
