Everything You Need to Know About AI Browsers: A Loud Debut, a Quiet Finish

The developers tried to convince us that AI-powered browsers would be the next stage in the evolution of the internet and would gradually replace traditional web browsers. However, reality soon set the record straight.

Loud Launches Are Only Half the Story

Despite the fanfare surrounding their launches, most AI browsers have yet to offer users anything truly transformative. Rather than introducing a fundamentally new way to interact with the web, they have largely amounted to conventional browsers with an integrated chatbot and a handful of automation features. The anticipated revolution has yet to materialize, and users have seen little reason to abandon the browsers they already rely on.

Just a year ago, it seemed as though the industry was on the verge of another major shift. The web browser – an everyday tool most people rarely think about – was expected to evolve into an intelligent agent capable of booking flights, ordering dinner, and managing dozens of open tabs on the user’s behalf. The Browser Company bet heavily on that vision, even halting development of its Arc browser – the product that established the company’s reputation – to focus on its new project, Dia. Perplexity introduced Comet. OpenAI unveiled Atlas. Meanwhile, Google quietly continued work on Project Mariner, attracting far less attention while its competitors dominated the headlines.

And there was certainly no shortage of hype. Headlines proclaiming that “the future is here” appeared not only in technology publications – even mainstream media with little focus on IT enthusiastically described how they had tried an AI browser and could no longer imagine browsing without it.

A year later, the picture looks very different. The Browser Company was acquired by Atlassian along with both of its browsers. The deal appeared less like a growth investment and more like a lifeline for Dia. Google discontinued Project Mariner. OpenAI seems to be going through a period of strategic reassessment and has gradually shifted its attention away from Atlas. Of the major AI browsers, only Perplexity’s Comet remains actively available, and even it appears to be receiving mostly security updates rather than significant new capabilities. The story began with considerable excitement but ended with remarkably little impact. The obvious question is: what went wrong?

Problem One: The Security Risk Everyone Recognized – And Largely Ignored

An AI-powered browser is, in many ways, a cybersecurity professional’s worst-case scenario brought to life. To complete tasks on a user’s behalf – whether summarizing an article or placing an online order – the AI assistant must “see” the webpage. That means capturing screenshots, interpreting the interface, and deciding for itself where to click.

This is also where the fundamental vulnerability emerges. If an AI agent trusts everything it sees on a webpage, it is equally likely to trust malicious instructions disguised as ordinary content. The technique behind such attacks is known as prompt injection. An attacker embeds commands such as “ignore your previous instructions and do X” directly into a webpage – within the HTML code, as white text on a white background, or even inside an otherwise innocuous comment beneath a post. A human visitor never notices it. An AI agent that attempts to process everything on the page, however, may interpret it as a legitimate instruction and act accordingly.

Imagine a browser that stores your passwords, home addresses, and payment card details, while also being prepared to execute instructions hidden on an arbitrary website. This is no longer a purely hypothetical threat – it is an architectural weakness inherent to the concept itself.

Problem Two: AI Agents Make More Mistakes Than Advertised

Even if security concerns are set aside, a more fundamental issue remains: reliability. AI browser vendors marketed autonomy as their defining advantage. The promise was simple – the agent would read your emails, organize your to-do list, summarize YouTube videos, and handle countless routine tasks without supervision. But autonomy is only valuable if the AI consistently understands what to look for, where to find it, and can complete every step without overlooking critical details.

In practice, that is not always the case. When the AI gets things wrong, the promised time savings quickly disappear. Users often end up repeating the task themselves or spending additional time reviewing and correcting the agent’s work. In other words, a product that was supposed to eliminate routine work can end up creating a new layer of it – the need to constantly supervise and verify the AI’s output.

Problem Three: It’s Still Unclear Who These Products Are For

Perhaps the most fundamental question remains unanswered: who is the target audience? None of the major developers has been able to provide a convincing answer. Are AI browsers intended for experienced users who have spent years refining their workflows and are deeply attached to their preferred browser? Or are they designed for newcomers who often struggle to navigate the web in the first place?

AI browsers were marketed as “the next step in the evolution of the internet” – an appealing and ambitious vision, but one that often lacked a clear value proposition. Personally – and, judging by the market, I am far from alone – I have yet to find a compelling reason to replace a familiar browser with one that regularly makes mistakes while often performing tasks more slowly. As a result, AI browsers have largely remained a niche curiosity rather than establishing themselves as a new software category. For now, they feel more like web browsers with built-in chatbot capabilities than a fundamentally different way of using the internet.

The Fundamental Issue: The Web Was Never Designed for This

At the heart of the problem lies a more fundamental reality. The modern web was built for people, not autonomous software agents. This is not a question of ethics or the “rights” of AI – it is simply a matter of technical design. Websites, user interfaces, and online services were created with the assumption that a human, rather than an AI agent, would be interacting with them.

As a result, most websites are optimized for human perception and decision-making, not for autonomous systems that must interpret visual layouts, infer intent, and execute actions independently. Asking AI agents to operate reliably within an environment that was never designed for them introduces complexity that current browser architectures have yet to overcome.

Instead of simply reading a well-structured webpage, the AI agent often has to interpret what is effectively a screenshot of the interface and infer what each element represents – a process that is considerably slower and less reliable than it may appear. In many cases, the agent is also blocked by CAPTCHA challenges or Cloudflare protections, which are specifically designed to filter out suspicious non-human traffic. Even when an AI agent successfully navigates these barriers, the process can consume a disproportionate amount of computing resources simply to accomplish tasks that a human user could complete with a single click. This mismatch highlights a broader limitation: today’s web infrastructure was optimized for human interaction, not for autonomous agents operating on a user’s behalf.

What Does This Tell Us?

The story of AI browsers illustrates a broader lesson: a compelling idea alone is not enough to replace a tool that has been refined over decades. To succeed, AI browsers must simultaneously address security, reliability, and performance while integrating into a web infrastructure that was never designed to support autonomous agents. In practice, each of these challenges has proven far more difficult than early product demonstrations suggested. This does not necessarily mean AI browsers have no future. Rather, it suggests that today’s implementations arrived before the underlying technologies – and, perhaps more importantly, the web itself – were ready to support the vision they promised. Until those fundamental limitations are addressed, AI browsers are likely to remain an interesting experiment rather than the next major evolution of web browsing.

Future models will undoubtedly become more accurate and efficient than those available today. However, the web browser remains one of the most challenging environments for autonomous software: it contains too many variables, is highly susceptible to manipulation, and requires substantial computational resources. As long as agents remain vulnerable to adversarial interference, continue to make errors in basic interactions, and demand disproportionately high computational costs, it is premature to regard them as the new standard for interacting with the internet.
