Apple repeated Samsung’s recent experience by independently disclosing confidential parameters of the upcoming iPhone Ultra through its own operating system. The corporation’s platform contains numerous indirect clues that indicate the preparation of this anticipated mobile device.
The internal architecture and program code of the iOS 27 beta are full of direct references to the upcoming foldable device, which will apparently be called the iPhone Ultra. In system files and frameworks, we noticed clear indicators responsible for the operation of the bent display, the presence of an additional panel, and other specific engineering solutions. The first Apple model with a flexible screen is expected to appear at the end of this year. Despite the fact that earlier only amateur visualizations and unofficial technical forecasts were spreading on the Web, the latest version of iOS 27 provided much more significant confirmation.
Software engineer M1Astra, whose data was published by Bloomberg, together with researcher Sam Henri Gold, who blogs on the X social network, discovered an array of information markers in the code base of the iOS 27 test build. Among the parameters found are variables responsible for the state of bending of the body, determining the current angle of inclination in degrees, the mechanical opening angle of the device, as well as the validity of these indicators. The screenshots published by Gold clearly demonstrate these software findings.
A special term for the bending state is most likely needed by the system to accurately identify whether the iPhone Ultra is in a closed or open position. The other three parameters found indicate the ability of iOS to calculate the exact amplitude of the opening of the case halves. This is a direct proof of the use of a special hinge mechanism with the ability to be freely fixed at different angles, as opposed to simpler designs that have only two extreme positions. Such findings suggest that Apple’s foldable flagship will receive software tools similar to Flex Mode, which has previously become a hallmark of flexible Android devices. Thanks to this technology, users will be able to leave the phone in a semi-folded state, using it like a miniature laptop. This state allows users to watch videos, conduct video communication sessions, or display a full-fledged virtual keyboard on the bottom of the panel without using their hands.
In addition, Apple’s operating system contains references to an updated service designed to repair and diagnose displays. However, the modification of this utility for iOS 27 clearly spells out the parameters related to the auxiliary screen, an additional layer of protective coating, and a pair of additional ambient light sensors. This set of specifications leaves little doubt that this is a smartphone with a flexible design.
Bloomberg experts also emphasize that certain publicly presented features of iOS 27 look most logical in the context of integration into foldable devices. For example, Apple has introduced large-format widgets that can occupy the entire space of a standard screen, which will allow them to fill exactly half of the working area on a flexible device. At the same time, the developers have modernized the smartphone screen duplication tool for Mac computers, adding the ability to display the interface in large-scale proportions typical of the iPad. Obviously, such an enlarged broadcast format will be perfectly adapted to the large-scale internal display of a flexible phone.
During one of the sessions for software creators, Apple representatives actively promoted the updated strategy of application adaptability. They emphasized that developers are now faced with the task of creating interfaces not for specific models or fixed screen orientations, but for dynamic scale ranges and various aspect ratios. This development philosophy will be most beneficial for the foldable iPhone line, as each individual panel of such a device will have its own unique dimensions and proportions. In any case, Apple is actively preparing for the successful launch of the iPhone Ultra. The launch of this smartphone is expected in September, so there are still a few months left before the official presentation.
It is worth adding that this is not the first time that a similar incident has occurred when the manufacturer’s software reveals details about a future complex device in advance. Earlier this year, similar graphic materials and animation files were found in the One UI interface regarding Samsung’s upcoming foldable Galaxy Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra models.
