Every time Dyson enters a new market segment, it creates quite a stir. From hair dryers and styling tools to noise-canceling headphones and portable air purifiers – the company has certainly learned how to apply its expertise in airflow management to the most unexpected areas. With the announcement of the Dyson CameraJet, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer has decided to bring its cleaning expertise right into your mouths.
The name doesn’t immediately reveal what it is, since the combination of the words “camera” and “jet” is rarely associated with a toothbrush. However, that’s exactly what the CameraJet is. It’s a high-tech toothbrush with built-in optics, a liquid reservoir, and motors, allowing it to combine brushing, flossing, and rinsing into a single device.
Company founder James Dyson noted in a statement that by combining a camera, machine learning, precision hydrodynamics, advanced cleaning technologies, wireless connectivity, and Wi-Fi, the Dyson CameraJet offers a completely new approach to oral health care.
Although it may seem strange at first, after trying out the demo version, it becomes clear that Dyson’s entry into this category makes perfect sense. After all, what is an electric toothbrush with a motor if not a set of moving bristles designed to remove debris from hard-to-reach crevices? And Dyson excels at such mechanisms. If you’re wondering why the device has a camera, the answer lies partly in AI.
The Dyson CameraJet features a so-called 100,000-pixel macro lens camera located directly beneath the brush head. In familiar terms, that’s only 0.1 megapixels, which may seem modest, but this lack of resolution is fully compensated for by the software. Object recognition is handled by 16 million lines of code and a machine learning system that was trained on 470,000 images of teeth collected during development.
All this computational power has taught CameraJet to instantly detect gaps between teeth. When you brush your teeth and the system detects a gap, it sprays a cone-shaped jet of liquid that acts as dental floss right while you brush. To prevent excess liquid from accumulating in your mouth, the mouthwash is dispensed in microdoses. The reservoir, which wraps around the neck of the toothbrush, holds just 12.5 ml – equivalent to about 2.5 teaspoons.
According to Dyson, the optical gap-targeting system analyzes 28 frames per second in real time to detect gaps between teeth, and within 100 ms of detecting a gap, the device recognizes it and delivers a precise dose of liquid.
The optics are not only used to direct the water stream. Using the proprietary MyDyson app, you can examine your own mouth, including the backs of your teeth. Live video streaming works only during an active examination or automatic fluid delivery, and Dyson has assured users that no images are stored either on the device or on cloud servers. The app also provides tips, instructions, and personalized recommendations for improving your brushing technique, detailing which areas are being cleaned well and which need more attention. In addition, you can use the app to adjust the brush speed and spray modes.
In addition to the camera, the developers used an anti-gravity reservoir with a diaphragm pump and a pressurized reservoir, which adjust as the brush moves to ensure a stable stream of liquid in any position. This means that no matter how you hold the brush, CameraJet will deliver the liquid, even if you tilt it at an unusual angle to reach your back teeth.
Dyson specifically emphasizes the importance of the jet’s shape. Instead of the usual narrow stream found in most water flossers, Dyson’s hydrodynamics experts spent years refining the jet’s geometry for more effective plaque removal. The company even created its own artificial plaque as part of a five-year collaboration with the National University of Singapore’s School of Dentistry. The result of this research is a cone-shaped nozzle, which Dyson claims provides wider coverage for rinsing away plaque at lower pressure, making the procedure gentler on the gums and enamel.
As for refill liquids, you can use your favorite clear, SLS-free mouthwash to avoid foaming. Dyson also offers its own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foam mouthwash for use with the CameraJet, so that foam doesn’t obstruct the camera’s view.
As for the bristles, despite the vibration, negative ionization, cameras, and AI, the most important element remains the cleaning head itself. The CameraJet features a two-component, contoured bristle design that better follows the contours of the teeth. Dyson notes that it also effectively cleans along the gumline: the softer outer bristles run along the gums, while the stiffer inner bristles remove surface stains.
Each brush head has a noise-reducing silencer for comfort and also contains an RFID chip that tracks not only when it’s connected to the device but also the number of cleanings performed. This is not intended to monitor the user, but to provide a timely reminder when the brush head needs to be replaced. The company also offers a soft brush head option for people with sensitive teeth and gums.
Like most sonic toothbrushes, the CameraJet will alert you if you’re applying too much pressure. The brush mechanically moves the bristles using variable sonic oscillation technology, which ensures continuous bristle movement and prevents the motor from stalling in hard-to-reach areas. To replenish water and power, a complete docking station has been designed that fills the reservoir in just 3 seconds. It also recharges the device between uses, and the set includes a travel case.
The Dyson CameraJet is available in two signature colors: Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink. The price is $499, which includes the docking station, a power cable, two standard brush heads, and a travel case. Dyson products are traditionally more expensive than those of competitors, but they are generally known for their high reliability. In addition, this model features a built-in irrigator and an optical system.
