Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk has expressed the view that, in the future, the market capitalization of the aerospace corporation SpaceX could exceed the total value of our entire planet if the team manages to fully achieve its goals. The businessman’s comment was a direct response to a post on social media platform X, in which the author questioned the feasibility and logic of the recently announced financial agreement between SpaceX and Anthropic, a promising artificial intelligence startup.
The wave of discussion was sparked by an X user named Thomas D., who expressed outright skepticism about the commercial agreement, noting that this move could prove very costly for Anthropic itself. The blogger wrote that it is still too early to draw definitive conclusions, but he wonders whether history will record this contract between Anthropic and SpaceXAI, valued at between $7.5 billion and $40 billion, as the most obvious and egregious mistake in the entire history of AI development – one that management made of its own accord.

Thomas D. wondered whether the startup’s top management really considered xAI’s technologies too far behind the cutting edge to see them as a real threat, since otherwise it’s hard to explain why they would transfer such colossal financial resources to their direct market competitor. In his view, the Grok family of models developed by xAI is now rapidly closing the gap with top-tier AI systems, which makes Anthropic’s actions appear to be a direct financial boost to a competitor.

As a reminder, in May, Anthropic representatives signed an official agreement to acquire 300 megawatts of computing infrastructure, which is effectively equivalent to all available resources at the first major Colossus 1 data center, located near Memphis, Tennessee, USA. According to published reports, under the terms of the contract, the startup committed to paying $1.25 billion monthly through May 2029, which is expected to generate a total of approximately $40 billion in net revenue for xAI. It is worth noting that in February of this year, the artificial intelligence company xAI, founded by Musk, completed its official merger and became part of SpaceX.
At the time these documents were signed, the billionaire completely dismissed any concerns about potential commercial risks to his own business, assuring that he sincerely respects and admires the achievements of the Anthropic team, despite the fact that he had previously publicly criticized the organization on multiple occasions.
Responding to Musk’s recent remark that SpaceX would eventually be worth more than Earth itself, Thomas D. emphasized that such statements only prove the validity of his initial fears. The blogger noted that this is exactly what he was trying to say, since it is completely unclear what motives competitors have for agreeing to fund Musk’s venture, thereby running the risk of significantly bringing forward and accelerating the realization of such ambitious plans. He also speculated that Anthropic’s executives might sincerely believe that this deal will ultimately benefit them more, or that they hope to completely defeat SpaceX in the technology market before Musk’s predictions begin to play any significant role. In any case, the author of the post called this behavior extremely intriguing and an interesting move in the game.
Elon Musk himself did not elaborate or explain exactly what he meant by saying the company was valued higher than the planet Earth. His optimistic post immediately sparked a significant amount of skepticism and sarcasm among many other X users. One commenter sarcastically reminded the businessman of his past promises, writing that these statements sound exactly like his previous claims about the DOGE project’s ability to cut U.S. government spending by $2 trillion, or his assurances that the Cybertruck electric pickup would break the $40 price barrier and sell 250,000 units annually, or the promises to launch passenger flights around the globe on Starship rockets as early as 2019. Another participant in the discussion succinctly summed up the debate, noting that there is simply nothing in the world that could be more valuable than our entire planet.
