Google has officially launched a standalone Gemini app for macOS, which became available today. After installation, users can call up the compact chat window from anywhere on the system with Option + Space, while Option + Shift + Space opens the full desktop interface.
One of the key features of the new app is the direct access to screen content. This allows Gemini to “see” everything on the display, from documents and design layouts to web pages that the user is working with. This approach eliminates the need to manually copy text or images to interact with artificial intelligence.

“We’re laying the groundwork for a truly personalized, proactive, and powerful desktop assistant, and we’ll be sharing more details in the coming months,” Michael Friedman, the group product manager responsible for the Gemini app, wrote in a blog post.

At the same time, Gemini is not the first such solution for Mac. OpenAI has been actively developing its influence among users of this platform from the very beginning. The ChatGPT developer has recently added support for direct code reading from popular development environments such as Visual Studio Code and JetBrains, and released a separate Codex app for macOS. The Windows segment is dominated by Microsoft thanks to the deep integration of Copilot, so it was important for Google to prevent OpenAI from monopolizing the Mac ecosystem.

Despite the fact that Windows has already implemented a significant number of built-in AI features – so much so that some users are even tired of their excess – Microsoft has already started to revise or change some of them. At the same time, Apple has not yet offered full integration of artificial intelligence in its own operating system.
Although the Apple Intelligence platform was presented during WWDC 2024, key features, such as Personalized Intelligence and deep understanding of screen content, faced significant delays. As a result, the company decided to change its approach and announced a collaboration with Google to create the next generation of Siri. According to available information, Apple will pay Google more than $1 billion as part of this deal.

The launch of a separate Gemini app allows Google to maintain direct contact with the most demanding Mac users. The company realizes that over time, its AI solutions can be integrated into interfaces developed by Apple, which poses a risk of losing its own recognition. That is why Google seeks to consolidate its presence in this ecosystem even before full integration by the platform.
