Less than two months after the launch of Google Pics, the search giant decided that its AI-powered photo editor was practically ready for a full-scale launch. Google Pics will be available to Google Workspace users starting August 18. Pics lets you create and edit graphics directly within Google Workspace office apps, such as Slides, Docs, Sheets, and more. Restrictions on the use of generative AI will take effect in February 2027.

Google Pics, an AI-powered image creation and editing tool that the search giant announced at this year’s Google I/O conference, is set for a major rollout to Google Workspace corporate and educational accounts in August. This comes after just three months of testing as part of the Gemini Alpha experiment. Google announced that the rollout will begin on August 18 for users at organizations with subscriptions to Google Workspace Business Standard, Google Workspace Business Plus, Google Workspace Enterprise Standard, Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Google Workspace AI Expanded Access, and Google AI Pro for Education.

Built on Google’s proprietary visual model, Nano Banana, the new Pics feature will function both as a standalone web app and as an integrated tool directly within Workspace services such as Slides, Docs, and Sheets. Key features of the service include generating images based on text prompts, adjusting specific details in images, editing or translating text, replacing certain elements with others, and more. These tools are specifically designed to address the most common issues with AI-generated graphics, including distorted object proportions, spelling errors, or illegible characters in text, as well as potential mismatches between individual details and the overall background.
In the initial phase, Pics will be available only to Google’s business customers and the education sector. With its positioning, this product clearly challenges a number of major players in the digital graphics space, such as Adobe – specifically its online editor Adobe Express – and the Canva platform, as well as popular stock image services like Shutterstock and iStock.
Pics will be a direct competitor to Canva’s Magic Grab tool, which allows users to move, scale, and reposition objects in images, as well as Adobe’s built-in background removal feature. With the ability to edit graphics directly within the office suite, users will no longer need to export files to third-party programs.

Regarding the upcoming changes, Google noted that Pics will be enabled by default for all Workspace customers during rollout, though users can opt out of it in their settings if they wish.
The company also added that limits on the use of generative AI will be implemented as access to Pics expands, although users can expect priority access to the service through February 28, 2027. Google has not yet announced a release date for Pics for regular consumer Google account holders.
