On April 3, 1973, something happened that changed the world of communications forever: Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first phone call from a portable mobile device while standing on the sidewalk of Sixth Avenue in New York City – at about 11:35 a.m. local time. This event is considered to be the official birth of the mobile phone as a phenomenon that later became an integral part of everyday life for people around the world.
Cooper, who was one of Motorola’s top engineers and led the development of portable phone technology, called his longtime competitor Joel Engel at Bell Labs, the very team that was working on similar technologies. In the conversation, he said that he was calling from a mobile device, demonstrating that the idea of a “phone that goes with you” had become a reality.
The device from which the call was made – a prototype Motorola DynaTAC 8000X – weighed about 1.1 kg and measured about 23 × 12.7 × 4.4 cm, which today resembles a huge “brick” rather than a modern smartphone. It provided only about 20-30 minutes of talk time and required tens of hours to fully charge the battery.
This exciting demonstration was the culmination of many years of work by Cooper and his team. For more than a decade, Motorola invested significant resources in the development of mobile technology before it became commercially available. It was only in 1983, after this historic moment, that the first Motorola DynaTAC 8000X mobile phone was made available for sale to the general public.
The first mobile call didn’t happen in a vacuum – it was the result of decades of innovation in wireless communications, including the development of the concept of “cellular” networks that allowed calls to move between coverage areas. These ideas became the foundation for modern mobile systems and went on to transform mobile phones from expensive devices into mass communication tools that have billions of users today.
Today, many people cannot imagine their daily lives without a mobile phone, a device that allows them not only to make calls but also to exchange messages, surf the Internet, organize work and interact with other people in real time. It was the historic call made by Cooper in 1973 that was the first step towards this mobile revolution.
