Insta360 has gained worldwide recognition for its 360-degree panoramic cameras. However, the Luna Ultra opens a completely new chapter in the brand’s history, becoming the debut of a specialized compact camera with a stabilizer from this manufacturer.
This product was created in close cooperation with the legendary Leica brand, and its main target audience is independent digital content creators who have been looking for a compromise between buying a DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and a bulky mirrorless system, without finding intermediate options on the market. The retail price of the device is $769.99, which is significantly higher than the price tag of any member of the Osmo Pocket line. At the same time, this device has functionality that is completely inaccessible to DJI equipment.

The main technical parameters of the novelty include a dual Leica Summicron optical system, which consists of a main one-inch sensor with 8K resolution and f/1.8 aperture at a focal length of 20 mm equivalent, as well as an additional 1/1.3-inch optical format telephoto lens with f/2.0 aperture and 60 mm focal length, which guarantees six times zoom without loss of quality and twelve times digital zoom. The key hardware difference in this market segment is a removable two-inch OLED touchscreen capable of acting as a remote viewfinder and controller at a distance of up to 20 meters from the operator. For professionals, there is a full-fledged professional video toolkit in a portable design that allows recording videos in 8K format at 30 frames per second or 4K at 120 frames per second with support for Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log profile. The mechanical three-axis stabilization system is powered by Deep Track 5.0 algorithms and provides such modes as subject tracking, automatic and group tracking, and intelligent framing. The new camera is already available in two color solutions – Cosmic Black and Stellar White.

The Luna Ultra camera is equipped with Leica Summicron premium optics for both built-in modules – the same label the German manufacturer uses for high-end glass for its own rangefinder cameras. Three authentic color profiles are available to users from the factory, including Natural, Vivid, and Chrome. These settings have nothing to do with common social media filters, as they are carefully calibrated display modes based on Leica’s long-standing expertise in film and digital color, which is also used in the high-end Q-Series cameras. How much this historical heritage will affect the final quality of the footage compared to competitors’ products will be shown in detailed tests by independent experts in the coming weeks. However, the declared technical characteristics already provide a solid basis for this.

It is also worth mentioning that DJI is currently suing Insta360 for patent infringement. Unlike the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which is equipped with a fixed display, the Luna Ultra offers a truly innovative solution in the form of a two-inch OLED screen that can be detached from the main body. In this state, it turns into a wireless remote control and monitor that transmits high-definition images at a distance of up to 20 meters. This opens up fundamentally new possibilities for authors who shoot alone, because now the camera can be fixed on a tripod or mounted at a low angle, while continuing to control the composition of the frame from the opposite end of the room. No other compact stabilizer offers such an advantage in organizing workflow. When connected to a device, the screen automatically adjusts to vertical or horizontal orientation and serves as the main interface for navigating menus.

In terms of hard numbers, the Stellar White color weighs 235 g, which makes it heavier than its DJI competitor. The built-in 1550 mAh battery is designed for four hours of continuous operation. The integrated storage capacity is 47 GB, expandable via microSD card up to 1 TB. A system of four microphones is responsible for capturing sound, with an integrated windproof function for outdoor use.
A magnetic mounting system allows for quick installation of additional filters and optical attachments, including a wide-angle converter that extends the camera’s viewing angle to 108 degrees. Wireless data transmission and communication in the head unit is provided by a modern Wi-Fi 6 module.
