Although OnePlus’s operations are effectively coming to an end in many parts of the world, owners of its devices will not be left without software support. However, major changes are on the horizon: the company’s proprietary OxygenOS skin is finally becoming a thing of the past, and it will be replaced by its partner’s ColorOS.

Following the effective cessation of OnePlus’s operations in the United States and European countries, the company has confirmed the discontinuation of its global software platform, OxygenOS. Starting with the release of Android 17, all of the brand’s current smartphones will switch to using ColorOS from its parent company, OPPO. This move will also affect users in India, where OnePlus insists it intends to continue operations, although reliable sources suggest otherwise.

In its official statement, OnePlus notes that this decision is part of an effort to optimize its software development strategy. Following the release of ColorOS 17, owners of compatible OnePlus devices worldwide will have the option to voluntarily switch to the new system. The company explains this move as an effort to unify design processes, accelerate the release of updates, improve overall software quality, and make the most efficient use of shared resources across engineering departments and research and development centers.

At first glance, this transformation seems rather unusual, since OxygenOS was once the hallmark and a key element of OnePlus’s identity. However, in the long term, it makes perfect sense. As OPPO is gradually phasing out this sub-brand, merging the software platforms will significantly simplify the process of releasing updates for phones already purchased by users. Moreover, in the Chinese market, OnePlus devices have long been running on ColorOS.

In recent years, OxygenOS has, in fact, already become a copy of ColorOS. The only differences were in the details: the OxygenOS version traditionally took a more lenient approach to background app activity and, in general, was better optimized for the needs of consumers in international markets.

For older models that won’t receive an update to Android 17, OnePlus will maintain basic support based on previous versions of OxygenOS. Meanwhile, owners of newer models who wish to receive full ongoing support will most likely have to switch to ColorOS. The company specifically notes that fans of the old interface will have the official option to roll back to OxygenOS.

Users will be able to decide for themselves whether to switch to the latest version of ColorOS. Software support for older models that are no longer eligible for updates will also continue as usual. If they switch to ColorOS, owners will retain the right to revert to OxygenOS, and the list of firmware versions available for this will be published in future official announcements.

OPPO

OPPO assures that it will fully fulfill all its obligations to customers, guaranteeing regular system updates, security patches, and the necessary technical support for all released models. The realme brand, which is also part of the OPPO ecosystem, has similarly confirmed its transition to the unified ColorOS platform with the release of Android 17.
