OnePlus is not sitting still. After years of perfecting smartphones, the company is reportedly preparing a move towards a dedicated 8-inch portable gaming device.
This decision seems both inevitable and extremely risky. According to fairly reliable leaks, this is not a side project or an unfinished accessory. The team is deeply immersed in the development of a device that can really challenge the existing portable gaming market. Most brands simply “attach” a controller to a phone and call it a gaming solution, but here we see a real attempt to create an independent device. It’s not unusual for OnePlus: their commitment to the motto “Never Settle” often leads to such experiments.
Why 8 inches? This is a slightly unusual “average” solution. Smartphones usually don’t exceed 6.7 inches, and tablets start to be comfortable only at 11 inches. But the main thing is ergonomics. A portable device should remain comfortable even after several hours of play. If your wrists get tired after half an hour, the product is doomed to failure. An 8-inch screen provides enough space for complex interface elements without the bulkiness of a laptop motherboard. It’s about visual immersion. Staring at a tiny smartphone screen while playing a serious game is a young person’s pastime, and OnePlus knows that their audience wants a larger experience.
The real power lies in the hardware. According to reports, the flagship Dimensity processor from MediaTek will be responsible for computing. MediaTek used to be associated with low-cost solutions, but now their top-of-the-line chips are able to effectively manage heat even better than their more famous competitors. For a portable device, heat is the main enemy, it reduces frames and spoils the user experience. If OnePlus manages to optimize the Dimensity so that it stays cool even under load, it could be a really successful solution. However, the real test is benchmarks. Optimization often becomes a stumbling block for ambitious gaming projects.
The portable gaming market is already full of competitors. On the one hand, there are PC-oriented solutions like Steam Deck, and on the other hand, mobile casual gamers. OnePlus is trying to find a niche in the middle. This is a bold step. Whether it will become a regular part of the company’s lineup or remain an experiment depends on the implementation. In any case, the flagship Dimensity in a portable 8-inch body is at least an attempt to stand out in a crowded market.
