It is already known that OpenAI is developing consumer hardware under the leadership of Jony Ive and his team; however, the first gadget the company has officially unveiled has nothing to do with that. The device is not aimed at a broad audience, but specifically at developers. OpenAI has partnered with keyboard manufacturer Work Louder to introduce the Codex Micro physical keypad, designed for developers who work with multiple AI agents via Codex – OpenAI’s agent-based programming platform.

As AI agents are required to perform increasingly complex and time-consuming tasks, developers have to keep track of multiple workflows simultaneously. Codex Micro moves some of the controls from the ChatGPT desktop app to a separate device with physical keys and a joystick.

Codex Micro is equipped with Agent Keys featuring RGB backlighting that indicates the status of connected Codex AI agents. Developers can see whether an agent is currently processing a request, performing a task, waiting, or has already completed its work, and can switch between active agents with a single press. The device also features Command Keys for frequently used actions, such as confirming or rejecting changes, starting a new chat, activating push-to-talk mode, or sending messages.

The built-in joystick allows you to run common development workflows, including reviewing pull requests, debugging errors, and refactoring code. And the rotary control lets you adjust Codex’s reasoning level depending on the complexity of the task at hand.

It is reported that in the ChatGPT desktop app, you can customize the settings for all buttons and controls. The device supports Windows and macOS, as well as connections via Bluetooth or USB-C. It features 13 mechanical switches, a sensor, a joystick, a rotary knob, and an additional set of Codex keycaps.

The Codex Micro costs $230 and is already available for pre-order. The device will be released in a limited edition.

Since the beginning of this year, Codex has rapidly gained popularity among developers. In early April, its number of weekly active users reached 3 million. By the end of April, following a major update that added support for Computer Use, image generation, and other features, Codex had already reached 4 million weekly active users. Last week, following the launch of the unified ChatGPT app with Codex integration and the release of GPT-5.6, the platform began growing even faster. Codex now has 8 million weekly active users.
