Following a limited soft launch of the GPT-5.6 model series last month, OpenAI recently expanded access to all three models in the family: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna. It is noted that since the launch, the company has made several changes based on feedback from early users.

GPT-5.6 Luna is the smallest and most cost-effective model in the series, designed for fast, less resource-intensive workloads. Next is GPT-5.6 Terra, the most balanced model. The company emphasizes that it delivers performance comparable to GPT-5.5, but at half the cost. And finally, the series’ flagship is the GPT-5.6 Sol model, which was developed specifically for complex reasoning, programming, scientific work, cybersecurity, and more.

The launch caused an unprecedented surge in traffic, which nearly doubled the previous record. To assist users affected by the sharp increase in traffic, OpenAI repeatedly lifted usage limits for ChatGPT Work and Codex accounts over the weekend. The company also announced the temporary suspension of the five-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus, Business, and Pro subscribers. However, OpenAI did not specify when this limit would be reinstated.
OpenAI has also implemented optimizations to the inference mechanism, making GPT-5.6 Sol more efficient. According to Thibault Sottio from the OpenAI Codex team, the resulting resource savings are passed on to subscribers and should provide approximately 10% more available usage.

OpenAI is also expanding access to the new “banked reset” feature, which allows users to save a usage limit reset and activate it as needed. Initially, this feature was available only on the desktop version, but it can now be used on the web version and in mobile apps. OpenAI has rolled out the “banked reset” feature to approximately 500,000 ChatGPT Work and Codex users and has also fixed an issue that caused usage limit resets to be applied incorrectly for a small number of users.

Amid intensifying competition with OpenAI, Anthropic has once again extended its promotional offer for Claude Fable 5, which was originally set to end on July 12. The company says that Fable 5 will remain available on all paid Claude subscription plans through July 19. Additionally, Anthropic is maintaining the 50% increase in weekly usage limits for Claude Code for the duration of the promotion.
