Surprisingly, despite their long and prolific careers, Stephen King and Sam Raimi – two iconic figures in the horror genre – have never collaborated. That is about to change thanks to an upcoming film project from Searchlight Pictures, which is developing an adaptation of King’s 1996 novel *Desperation*. Raimey will oversee production through his own production company, Ghost House Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations for the director’s chair are being led by Zach Lipowski and Adam B. Stein, who released the film *Final Destination: Blood Ties* in 2025. Ryan Brennan has been entrusted with developing the screenplay.
The book *Desperation* was released simultaneously with the novel *The Regulators*, which serves as its “mirror” counterpart and was published by King under the pen name Richard Bachman. The events of *Desperation* and *The Regulators* unfold in parallel dimensions, although they feature many of the same characters, and the storylines revolve around deadly events triggered by the same mysterious villain. However, the new film is based exclusively on the book *Desperation*, leaving *The Regulators* as a potential option for a sequel.
The synopsis of the new adaptation describes the events as follows: Trapped in a remote town where a terrifying evil has been unleashed, a group of travelers is forced to fight a desperate battle for survival as a sadistic police officer, possessed by dark forces, turns routine arrests into a merciless struggle for their very lives.
In 2006, *Desperation* was already adapted into a TV movie. That version aired on ABC, with Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, Stephen Weber, and Annabeth Gish in the lead roles. King himself wrote the screenplay for that version.
Currently, Mike Flanagan, who regularly adapts King’s works, is working on a new film adaptation of his novella *The Mist*. Meanwhile, in 2025 alone, three different film adaptations of King’s works were released: *The Monkey* by Osgood Perkins, *The Long Walk* by Francis Lawrence, and *The Running Man* by Edgar Wright.
