At first glance, it seems that the Samsung Galaxy Flip8 foldable smartphone will be another example of evolution rather than radical change. Earlier, insider OnLeaks presented CAD renders that give an idea of what the tech giant is preparing for the Unpacked event in July. But now new leaks have emerged, according to which there will be several changes in the “stuffing”, and the smartphone will become lighter and thinner when folded.

Last year, Galaxy Flip7 introduced a full-width 4.1″ external screen. This was an important improvement and made the smartphone much more convenient, as now in many cases there is no need to unfold it. In Flip8, this element has been fortunately retained, but the hinge has been improved anyway. After all, this detail determines the impression of using a folding device almost more than other characteristics.

The dimensions of the Flip8 in the unfolded state are 166.8×75.4×6.6 mm, i.e. the same as its predecessor. But the updated hinge reduces the folded thickness from 13.7 mm to 13.2 mm. The 0.5 mm reduction in folded thickness may seem insignificant, but this difference is noticeable in everyday use. For example, when carried in a pocket or used with one hand. In addition, according to a Jukan insider, the design change will remove a significant drawback – a visible “wrinkle” on the main screen. Users of foldable smartphones constantly encounter it, and minimizing it to an almost imperceptible level will be a real improvement in the experience.

Another insider claims that the new generation will also be lighter than the previous one. The Galaxy Flip7 weighs 188 g, and the upcoming Galaxy Flip8 is expected to weigh around 180 g.

Galaxy Flip7 switched from Snapdragon to Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 2500 processor. This solution has received mixed reviews in benchmarks, but has shown sufficient performance in real-world use. The Exynos 2600, based on the 2nm process technology, follows the same course. It offers better energy efficiency and advanced AI processing capabilities. The battery life of the device is expected to improve even without an increase in battery capacity.

There are also hints of support for Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. The mockup images show circular magnetic elements on the back – a similar solution was previously considered as a factor in the redesign of the Galaxy S27 camera. If the Flip8 has Qi2 support, it will eliminate one of the few reasons to use a case.

The Unpacked event, which will showcase the new generation of foldable smartphones, will be held in London on July 22 and is of strategic importance. Europe is the region with the fiercest competition in the premium segment for Samsung, and the Flip models are the most affordable entry point into the foldable smartphone world for the brand. Launching in London a few months before the expected debut of the iPhone Fold in September allows the company to gain an early foothold in the key market. But it does not eliminate competition from the Motorola Razr 70 and 70 Ultra, which were introduced just last week.

Along with Galaxy Flip8, Fold8 and Fold8 Wide are also expected to be presented on July 22.
