Samsung’s patent portfolio often contains concepts that never make it to actual production. However, sometimes developments appear that look like a potential challenge to established standards. A new patent for a device called the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold Wide was just such a case. While most users are just getting used to smartphones with one hinge, the company is already offering a concept with two. And the Wide version seems to be aimed at those who want to get the effect of a movie theater-like screen right in their pocket.
Modern foldable smartphones in the book form factor are often criticized for being too narrow when folded. The new patent attempts to solve this problem. According to the description, Galaxy Tri-Fold Wide will have a display that is both wider and longer. This means a significant change in the approach: when unfolded, the user will not see an elongated rectangle, but a more convenient working plane. This format is closer to a full-fledged working environment, which can make the device a real tool for productive work, not just for entertainment.

The back panel looks rather restrained and does not contain any experimental solutions. Instead of non-standard shapes or hidden sensors, a familiar vertical module with three cameras is used. This is a familiar approach, which was probably chosen on purpose so as not to complicate the use even more, because the format with two hinges and three display segments is already quite unusual.

At the same time, the main intrigue is the placement of components inside the case. The hinges take up considerable space, which usually affects the capabilities of cameras. If the company succeeds in integrating flagship sensors into such a design, it could create serious competition for other manufacturers.
The idea is not limited to just enlarging the screen. The name Wide hints at a focus on multimedia content. Most movies are not adapted to the square displays of modern folding devices, which causes black bars to appear. Expanding the horizontal plane can solve this problem and provide a more comfortable video viewing experience. At the same time, the three-panel design will inevitably affect the thickness of the device, and it will probably feel quite massive. However, for users who value a large screen of approximately 10″ in folded format, this may be an acceptable compromise. In summary, the concept demonstrates the direction of development where the concept of “large display” is constantly expanding.
