Samsung could significantly enhance the premium feel and durability of its Galaxy Fold devices. According to available information, the company is testing a thicker layer of ultra-thin glass (UTG) on its upcoming phones. This move could finally make the annoying crease on the screen much less noticeable at first glance, and it will also help the display better withstand accidental bumps and drops during daily use.
Reports from supply chain sources indicate that Samsung is considering the use of 60-micron-thick UTG protective glass. This is a fairly significant increase compared to previous versions. It is reported that this thicker glass will initially be tested on the Galaxy Fold 8 Wide model, which is a wider, book-style version of the device with a modified aspect ratio. This decision seems quite logical for a pilot launch. If successful, this technological update could appear on a mass scale in the next Galaxy Fold 9 device.

Drawing parallels, the standard version of the Galaxy Fold 8 Ultra is expected to retain the current 45-micrometer-thick protective glass, which has already been used in recent devices such as the Fold 7. This selective approach allows Samsung to gather real-world user feedback on the new material without putting the entire lineup at risk all at once. At one time, the Fold 6 model was equipped with a 30-micrometer glass layer, after which the thickness was increased to 45 micrometers in later versions to improve damage resistance. The transition to a 60-micron layer will be another significant step in the development of the technology.
In addition to the display upgrade itself, Samsung is simultaneously developing more robust hinge mechanisms and overall protective layers. The main goal is to make the Galaxy family’s flexible devices more durable during intensive multitasking, multimedia viewing, and full-scale work tasks.
All these developments are unfolding as Samsung prepares for its next major Unpacked event. According to rumors, the presentation is set to take place on July 22, 2026, in the UK capital, London. If the announced improvements are confirmed, the Fold 8 Wide model will have an excellent chance to stand out as a more refined and polished option in the foldable device market, where competition is rapidly intensifying every year. Although production is still in its early stages and no official announcements have been made yet, such developments demonstrate that Samsung is taking user feedback seriously and actively improving the hardware of its foldable devices.
