For a long time, Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant remained without significant changes, but now the company has decided to radically update its capabilities. Samsung has announced a major update of Bixby that includes deeper integration of artificial intelligence. Thanks to this, the assistant should become more conversational and functional.

The update comes alongside the One UI 8.5 beta for the Galaxy S25 series. In addition to bug fixes, the firmware brings two key new features to Bixby that could significantly change the user experience.

First of all, the assistant now understands natural language better. The user no longer needs to formulate commands precisely or look for specific parameter names in the menu. It is enough to simply describe the desired result. For example, if you say, “I don’t want the screen to turn off while I’m looking at it,” Bixby will understand the request and activate the corresponding function “Keep screen on while watching.”

This way, users no longer have to manually navigate through different sections of the settings. The assistant analyzes the request, determines the desired setting, and performs the action automatically. This is especially useful in cases where a person knows what they want to change, but doesn’t remember where the desired menu or switch is located.

In addition, in some situations, Bixby not only performs the action, but also explains the cause of the problem. For example, if you ask: “Why does my phone screen stay on in my pocket?”, the assistant can tell you that the protection against accidental touches is probably turned off. In this case, Bixby will immediately offer to activate this function with a single tap.

The second important innovation is the support for real-time Internet search. Now the assistant can find relevant information without redirecting to a browser or other applications. All results are displayed directly in the Bixby interface.

For example, if the user asks to find hotels with children’s pools in the city, the assistant will show relevant results in a few seconds right in its own window. In addition, Bixby saves the history of conversations in a special menu, making it easy to return to previous answers.

Interestingly, Samsung has not officially specified which AI model underlies the updates. Earlier, the company published (and later deleted) a post about the integration of Perplexity into its smartphones. Demonstrations of the new version of Bixby are similar to those mentioned in that article, so it is possible that Perplexity is responsible for the new search and explanation capabilities.

Traditionally, Bixby has been inferior to AI assistants like Google’s Gemini. However, the situation may change after this update. In a basic comparison with Gemini on the Pixel 10, both assistants were able to display search results in their own interface. However, in the case of the always-on screen issue, Gemini only showed instructions for enabling accidental touch protection, while Bixby offered to activate the function immediately.

Whether the updated Bixby can really outperform the competition is hard to say, as more extensive testing in different scenarios is needed to draw an objective conclusion. Samsung is likely to reveal more details on February 25, along with the presentation of the Galaxy S26 series and the final version of One UI 8.5.
