OpenAI confirmed once again that it is working on its own AI device, but the company still keeps most details secret. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the company’s representatives once again made it clear that a new gadget is indeed under development, although there is still minimal official information about its format and capabilities.
AI-powered gadgets have tried to enter the market many times before, but most of them have failed. That’s why OpenAI’s collaboration with the former Apple chief designer, the legendary Jony Ive, has become one of the most talked-about moves in the industry. Expectations around this project are much higher than those of previous AI gadgets.

Chris Lehane, Head of International Relations at OpenAI, said at the Axios House event in Davos that the new device is scheduled for the second half of 2026. At the same time, he emphasized that this is only the “most likely” scenario, not a fixed date. Last year, after the acquisition of Johnny Ive, OpenAI reported that the first products of the new direction were planned to be shown in 2026. Since then, the timeline has not changed, but the company has not provided any specifics on the final appearance of the device.
OpenAI deliberately avoids details about the future AI gadget. CEO Sam Altman did not name any exact timeframe or provide a clear description of what the device would be. At the same time, he has already intrigued the public by stating that the new product should be “calmer” than a smartphone and not create constant information pressure.
Earlier, Altman and Ive hinted that any future OpenAI device would rely on simplicity, intuitiveness, and light playfulness in design. “I also love incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch – and you don’t feel afraid, and you want to use them almost carefree, almost without thinking that they’re just tools,” Ive said.

According to various sources, the new OpenAI device may belong to the category of wearable gadgets. It is not yet clear whether we are talking about a pin, headphones, an accessory behind the ear, or something else. Some publications and leaks claim that the device, codenamed Sweetpea, could be made in a headphone format, work with cloud computing, and be worn behind the ear. Other rumors speak of an alternative concept – a gadget called Gumdrop, which is supposedly the size of an iPod shuffle and has the shape of a pen without a screen.
