The trailer of the new Resident Evil movie has appeared online, and it looks unexpectedly high quality, although the gloomy tone may disappoint those who expect the campy atmosphere of Paul W.S. Anderson’s films. This time, it’s a serious horror. The director is Zack Gregg, who recently won an Oscar for Weapons.
The teaser shows the story of an inconspicuous medical courier who is forced to fight for his life in a farmhouse in the countryside. The plot is partially reminiscent of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. This is a standalone story in the Resident Evil universe that does not recreate the events of any particular game. In a conversation for the PlayStation Blog, Kregger noted that telling Leon’s story would have been “somewhat redundant” and “disappointing.”

At the same time, the director promises Easter eggs for fans of the franchise. The protagonist will have to face limited resource management, and healing items will be directly borrowed from Resident Evil 4. According to Kregger, the movie will have “a lot of small visual and thematic details,” but he does not want to reveal them in advance.
However, the trailer does reveal one detail. Fat Molded will appear in the movie as an antagonist, as one of these creatures seems to be hiding in the basement of a farmhouse. We can only hope that the medical courier knows about headshots and how to avoid acid vomiting.

The premiere of Resident Evil is scheduled for September 18. The movie stars Austin Abrams, who also played in Weapons. Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reyes are listed in the cast list, but they do not appear in the trailer. The general atmosphere of the film is reduced to the concept of “one hero trying to survive”, reminiscent of Evil Dead.
