The Steam Hardware lineup, which Valve announced last year, is gradually hitting the market. In early May, the Steam Controller was released at a price of $99, and now the company has officially confirmed the price of the Steam Machine – its all-in-one console-style solution for PC gaming. Currently, four models are available, which differ primarily in storage capacity and whether a controller is included in the package.

All versions of the Steam Machine are equipped with the same hardware platform. It includes a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and 12 threads, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, 16 GB of DDR5 memory, and 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory. All of this is housed in a chassis that Valve has been showcasing for several months now.

The base model of the Steam Machine costs $1,049. It is equipped with a 512 GB NVMe solid-state drive but does not come with a Steam Controller. However, users can expand storage using a microSD card slot. The next version is priced at $1,128. It has the same 512 GB drive but comes with a new Steam Controller.

For those who need more space for games and apps, models with a 2 TB drive are also available. The $1,349 Steam Machine again comes without a controller, but includes two additional interchangeable case panels – one made of red fabric and one of solid walnut – to replace the standard black panel. The most expensive configuration costs $1,428 and, once again, comes with a controller.

The Steam Machine runs on Linux-based SteamOS. The device is equipped with a 1 Gbps Ethernet port, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, one USB-C port, and four USB-A ports. It’s worth noting that the Steam Controller alone costs $100, but when included in a bundle, its price is effectively reduced to $80.

For a system with these specifications, the price seems quite high, although the design and compact form factor partially justify it. At the same time, the lack of upgradeability negatively affects the device’s appeal. Valve explained that the main reasons for this price were a prolonged component shortage and a significant increase in the cost of memory.

“The overall effect is that our original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable,” added the company. “So the prices we’re sharing today reflect the state of the world for manufacturing; or, more accurately, it reflects the price of the components as we’ve secured them over the past 6 months.”

Valve announced that pre-orders for the Steam Machine will be accepted starting June 25, and shipments will begin on June 29.
