WhatsApp Web may finally get one of the most anticipated features that users have been missing for years. The web version of the messenger has long allowed users to quickly reply to messages, transfer files, and synchronize chats between devices, but the lack of calling has remained a notable limitation. That may now change, as WhatsApp has reportedly started testing support for voice and video calls directly in the browser.

Currently, the innovation is only available to a small group of beta users, but the feature may be expanded to a wider audience over time. Information about the update was first published by WABetaInfo, which noted that WhatsApp Web already supports individual audio and video calls. Prior to that, the ability to make calls was only available through separate desktop applications for Windows and macOS, while the browser version remained limited in this aspect.

With the new feature, users will be able to start a call directly from the chat by clicking on the corresponding icon in the upper right corner of the interface. There is no need to install additional software, making WhatsApp Web a more versatile tool for work and communication. At the current stage, only one-to-one calls are supported, and there is no confirmation of group calls in the browser yet.

Reportedly, all calls via the web version remain protected by end-to-end encryption, similar to Android, iOS, and desktop applications. For this purpose, the Signal protocol is used, which is responsible for the security of messages and calls. In addition, the new feature may include the ability to share the screen during video calls. Such a tool will potentially make WhatsApp Web useful for quick demonstrations, instructions, or discussions of work tasks, especially for those who spend most of their time in the browser.

At the same time, Meta continues to work on other updates to WhatsApp, including tagging participants in group chats, a “Close Friends” feature for statuses, and the possible launch of a premium subscription with additional personalization and productivity features. As with most of the features, the exact timing of the web version’s wide launch has not yet been announced. For now, it’s only available in beta, but if the test is successful, browser-based calling may soon become a standard feature of WhatsApp Web.
