Xiaomi’s experimental detachable magnetic lens system, which was previously shown as a concept, may move to a real product in the near future. According to new leaks, the company has already begun the preliminary stage of mass production of the modular optics first shown during MWC 2025.
An insider told Digital Chat Station that the magnetic lens has entered the production phase and could potentially hit the market this year, although the exact launch dates have not yet been revealed. The brand name was not directly mentioned, but the most obvious candidate is the system Xiaomi demonstrated with the Xiaomi 15 series.
During the presentation of the novelty, the company’s CEO Lei Jun called the module an internal research project, but it attracted significant attention from both smartphone manufacturers and representatives of the photography industry due to the potential to combine mobility and professional optics.
The system is based on a magnetically detachable lens with a Micro Four Thirds sensor and a set of aspherical lenses. According to Xiaomi, the module is capable of providing a resolution of up to 100 megapixels, an equivalent focal length of 35 mm, and an aperture of f/1.4. This configuration is focused on improved low-light photography and a more natural perspective close to human vision, which is especially important for portrait and street photography.
Another key feature is the data transfer system. Xiaomi claims to use an almost instantaneous laser channel with a speed of up to 10 Gbps, which allows for lossless transfer of RAW files between the lens and smartphone. Image processing can be performed with the help of proprietary AISP technology using AI models on the device itself, which provides access to UltraRAW functions and dynamic range of up to 16 stops.
The system does not require complex setup, interfacing, or a separate power supply. The lens is simply attached to the smartphone magnetically and remains compact enough for everyday use. If Xiaomi is able to realize the claimed capabilities, this approach has the potential to compete even with some traditional Micro Four Thirds cameras, especially by combining a large sensor with computational photography.
