Many people have experienced a typical smart home problem: you install a stylish security camera somewhere in the far corner of the yard and suddenly find out that the Wi-Fi signal disappears there. Usually, you end up buying expensive mesh routers or running cables through the attic. But the new product from Xiaomi is designed to get around this problem by eliminating the router.
Xiaomi has introduced Smart Outdoor Camera 4 4G Dual-Camera Edition, a mobile-enabled outdoor security camera that works autonomously and does not depend on a home network. The main feature of the device is the presence of a 4G LTE module. Instead of connecting to Wi-Fi, the camera uses integrated SIM cards and is always online via the cellular network. For the Chinese market, Xiaomi has taken another bold step by offering an unlimited free plan for video streaming via the Mi Home app.
Although 4G cameras have existed before, they usually required a mandatory monthly payment for mobile Internet. Xiaomi has eliminated this obstacle, positioning the new product as a “set and forget” solution. This format is especially suitable for remote locations, construction sites, or those areas in the yard where Wi-Fi never reaches. It is these aggressive steps in the ecosystem that make Xiaomi a serious threat to traditional security brands.

The camera is equipped with a dual system of two 5-megapixel sensors: one is a wide-angle sensor and the other is a telephoto lens. This allows the device to simultaneously monitor the overall scene and can zoom in and track moving objects. Together, they provide 3K resolution shooting. In addition, Xiaomi’s dual optics provide significantly better spatial orientation. The f/1.6 aperture allows for better quality images in low light, and the intelligent full-color night vision lets you see details, not just silhouettes.
Reliability has also become an important aspect. The camera is IP66-rated, which means it is resistant to dust and powerful water jets. In addition, the device uses local AI analysis to recognize people and vehicles, which reduces the number of false alarms due to animals or moving leaves. Two-way audio communication is also provided.
The novelty was launched on a crowdfunding platform in China at a price of 379 yuan (approximately $54). A global release has not yet been confirmed, but international versions of Xiaomi usually receive a nano-SIM slot instead of built-in cards. If the camera enters global markets with a similar price, it will become a serious player in the segment of standalone video surveillance without Wi-Fi.
