YouTube is finally bringing back its private messaging feature, but it’s currently only available in select countries. The updated messaging system is already live in dozens of countries, including the UK, the US, and much of Europe.
Late last year, YouTube began testing a “new” way to send videos to friends without having to leave the app. Now, the service has announced the launch of an updated personal messaging feature that allows you to share videos, Shorts, and live broadcasts, as well as discuss them directly on YouTube. The feature is only available to users aged 18 and older who are logged into a verified channel and using the latest version of the mobile app.

Personal messages first appeared on YouTube back in 2017 in the mobile app. The feature was later renamed Messages. It allowed users to communicate with each other and share videos directly. However, on September 18, 2019, Google discontinued the feature, giving users a month to download an archive of their chats in ZIP format.

The exact reason for the shutdown was never announced. Instead, users were encouraged to move on to public comments, posts in the Community tab, and YouTube Stories. The previous version of the messages also faced moderation issues, which led Google to introduce stricter security and age verification rules for the new generation of the feature.
The updated messaging system is currently available in a number of countries, but Brand Accounts are not yet able to use it.

Before using the feature, you need to send a special invitation link to the other person. It is valid for exactly seven days from the moment it is created. If the recipient accepts the invitation, users will be able to exchange video and text messages directly in the app.
To delete a message, just press and hold it, and then select the option to cancel sending. In this case, the message will be deleted for both users. You can also delete the entire conversation by holding down the corresponding chat and selecting the delete option. However, in this case, the other person will continue to see the chat history on their device. To ensure safety, YouTube checks messages for compliance with the Community Guidelines.
