Aqara has been quietly building a smart home empire on a foundation of affordable, reliable, and surprisingly capable devices. While the big names are battling for control of your living room, Aqara is sneaking in through the back door with a host of sensors, cameras, and plugs that just work. We got our hands on a handful of their latest products to see if they live up to the hype.

Aqara Camera G100: Good Enough for Most
The Aqara Camera G100 is a perfect example of Aqara’s philosophy: it’s not the best, but it’s damn good for the price. With 2K resolution (knocked down to 1080p in HomeKit, thanks Apple), a wide 140-degree field of view, and an IP65 rating for outdoor use, it ticks all the right boxes. Setup is a breeze, and it plays nice with all the major smart home ecosystems.

But how’s the picture? Frankly, the image quality can be underwhelming. While the video feed is sharp enough in the native Aqara app, it loses some fidelity and can show artifacts when viewed through HomeKit. It won’t be winning any cinematography awards, but for keeping an eye on your porch or checking in on your pets, it’s perfectly adequate. It’s a classic case of “you get what you pay for,” but in this case, you might be getting a little more. For around $50, it’s hard to complain, though it’s worth noting you’ll have to provide your own USB power brick.

Aqara Water Leak Sensor: The Unsung Hero of Your Smart Home
Nobody wants to think about a water leak, but around $20 spent on an Aqara Water Leak Sensor can save you thousands in the long run. This little puck is a set-and-forget device that will reliably notify you at the first sign of trouble. The glossy, water-repellent plastic body has a solid, watertight seal for its two-year battery.
The biggest catch is that it requires an Aqara hub, a fact that isn’t always made clear on the product page and can be a frustrating surprise for new users. The pairing process can also be finicky; we had to make multiple attempts before it connected successfully. Once it’s set up, though, it’s a rock-solid performer, triggering an alert every single time in our tests.

Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E: The Future of Motion Detection is Here
Traditional motion sensors are dumb. They see you move, they turn on the lights. But what happens when you’re sitting still, reading a book? The lights go out, and you’re left waving your arms around like a lunatic.
The Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E solves this with cutting-edge millimeter wave (mmWave) technology. It can detect your presence even when you’re completely still, making for a much more seamless and intelligent smart home. The Aqara app provides a surprisingly intuitive way to set a detection radius in a space up to 50 square meters.

It’s not perfect, though. The hardwired power cable limits placement options, and unlike its more expensive sibling, the FP2, it lacks a built-in light sensor or the ability to set multiple detection zones. But for pure, reliable presence detection, the roughly $35 FP1E is a game-changer.
Aqara Smart Plug: More Than Just On and Off
At first glance, the Aqara Smart Plug looks like any other. You can turn it on and off with your phone, set schedules, and use it in automations. But its real value is in the details.
Energy monitoring is the star of the show, allowing you to track the power consumption of your appliances. The app even has a unique feature to tailor on-off functions to non-peak electricity hours, a clever way to save money on larger appliances. It also acts as a Zigbee repeater, strengthening your smart home network.

The plug itself is a bit bulky, potentially blocking adjacent outlets, and at around $30, it costs a bit more than some rivals. However, the advanced features and snappy Zigbee performance make it a worthy investment for those in the Aqara ecosystem.
Aqara LED Bulb T2: A Bright Idea with a Few Dim Spots
The Aqara LED Bulb T2 is a versatile and feature-packed smart bulb. It supports both Thread and Zigbee, is Matter-compatible, and offers a wide range of colors and tunable whites. It’s also incredibly bright and responsive, outperforming even some Philips Hue bulbs in our side-by-side tests.

While it supports Apple’s Adaptive Lighting, that feature is only available when using Zigbee, not the newer Thread protocol. Despite these issues, the T2’s fast pairing, excellent color reproduction, and advanced features like customizable transitions make it a strong contender in the smart lighting market for around $25.

Verdict
Aqara’s latest crop of smart home devices is a testament to the company’s commitment to affordability. While there are a few rough edges, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive. If you’re looking to dip your toes into the world of home automation, Aqara is a brand that should be on your radar. They might not have the brand recognition of the big guys, but they’ve got the goods.
