Now, the iconic wizarding world is preparing for a new chapter – this time as a television series. The new cast
HBO has officially revealed the lead cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton takes on the role of Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley. The search for the iconic trio involved an open casting call for actors aged 9 to 11, which took place in April 2025. More than 30,000 hopefuls from the UK and Ireland auditioned for the coveted roles.

Additionally, Luke Tallon is set to play Quirinus Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse takes on the role of Filch. He also suggested that Cillian Murphy could take on a role in the new adaptation. Several more recognizable names have joined the cast. As reported exclusively by Deadline, Bertie Carvel will take on the role of Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge. Draco Malfoy will be portrayed by Lox Pratt, with Johnny Flynn cast as his father, Lucius Malfoy. Within the Dursley family, Bel Powley will play Petunia Dursley, while Daniel Rigby takes on the role of her husband, Vernon. It has also been confirmed that Katherine Parkinson will play Molly Weasley, Ron’s mother.
Overall, the series is gradually expanding its cast by blending young actors with more experienced performers, aiming to create a refreshed yet recognizable version of the familiar universe.

What the series will offer

The series is also expected to delve deeper into the characters’ personal arcs, psychological motivations, and the development of relationships. For the first time, some scenes previously left to readers’ imagination may be brought to life on screen.
Insiders previously reported that a dedicated “mini-city” worth $1.2 billion was built for the Harry Potter series. This set includes the Dursley family home, a Tudor-style street, and even a specialized school for young actors portraying Hogwarts students.

Participation of J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling is involved in the project as an executive producer. HBO confirmed that she participated in selecting the writers and directors. Despite criticism directed at her over public statements about the transgender community, the studio has stated that this will not affect the show’s plot or creative direction, emphasizing the importance of her vision for the successful adaptation. Rowling continues to express her views on social media, but HBO representatives stressed that their priority is delivering a quality show, not engaging in political debates.

How much will it cost to create the series?
Casey Bloys, head of HBO/Max, hinted that the scale of the new project will be on par with, or even exceed, that of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. “We already have experience producing shows at this level,” he said. “Expect a similar or even larger scale. In short, we’ll spend whatever it takes to create a quality series.”
According to Deadline, the production of House of the Dragon cost around $200 million, while its marketing campaign was the largest in HBO’s history, with media spending exceeding $100 million. This total includes both advertising costs and the expenses involved in launching the campaign.
Based on this, the Harry Potter series will likely receive an equal or possibly larger budget and marketing support.

When to expect the premiere
Filming is set to begin in summer 2025 at Leavesden Studios, where the original films were shot. The series premiere is scheduled for 2027. It will be available on HBO and the Max streaming service.
