In the world of electric vehicles, official EPA and WLTP ratings sometimes promise long highway drives but ultimately fall short of the promised range. It seems that with the new Audi Q6 e-tron, the opposite will be true. During Edmunds’ real-world range test, the electric vehicle comfortably exceeded its own factory-rated figures. Edmunds promises a rigorous combined route consisting of 60% city driving with frequent stops and starts and 40% highway driving at an average speed of 64 km/h.

Audi’s midsize electric crossover exceeded the officially stated EPA range of 484 km, coming to a stop only after 542 km (with standard 20-inch wheels). These additional 58 km represent a roughly 12% bonus, which is enough for a couple more days of city driving.

Even more impressive is the Q6’s efficiency – the electric vehicle consumed 29.3 kWh per 161 km. While this figure isn’t revolutionary on its own, it significantly exceeds the official efficiency rating of 35 kWh per 161 km. A 16% improvement in efficiency means the car travels 5.5 km per kWh.

To fully appreciate why this result is a true turning point, it’s worth looking back at the early history of Audi’s electric vehicles. The original e-tron SUV was a heavy off-roader that failed to live up to its claimed range figures. The 2027 Q6 e-tron represents a significant change: it uses the new 800-volt Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which it shares with Porsche. Audi has set aside corporate pride, refined regenerative braking for smoother one-pedal driving, revamped the infotainment system’s software, and brought back physical buttons instead of touch controls.

The result of 542 km in real-world conditions sets an interesting benchmark for competitors. Audi is now practically on par with models such as the BMW iX (544 km in the same test) and the Cadillac Optiq (546 km). The Q6 even outperformed its faster and more expensive relatives: the Porsche Macan 4S (520 km) and the top-of-the-line Macan Turbo (484 km).

The Q6 e-tron strikes a balance in the luxury midsize crossover segment. Its dimensions are 4,770 × 1,935 × 1,692 mm, and its wheelbase is 2,888 mm, which is nearly identical to those of the BMW iX3 and the electric Porsche Macan. It feels more agile than the Mercedes EQE SUV and offers more legroom than the Genesis GV60. Two electric motors deliver power to all four wheels, ensuring effortless passing. The air suspension “absorbs” bumps while keeping the body level.

Actual range will always vary depending on a multitude of factors, such as air temperature, elevation changes, or how hard you press the accelerator pedal. Therefore, you shouldn’t take this 542 km figure as gospel for every winter trip. But exceeding the official range, combined with a premium driving experience, makes the Q6 e-tron one of the most compelling electric vehicles the company has ever created.
