Many people view tech companies’ attempts to enter the automotive sector with skepticism. These skeptics expect to see half-baked software solutions and mediocre design. But Xiaomi dispelled these fears when it first released the elegant SU7 sedan and later the YU7 crossover. Now, following the success of its electric vehicles, the Chinese tech giant is taking a new strategic step into the highly competitive premium family car segment.

It’s a bold move, but the new Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 is designed not only to help the company establish a foothold in this segment but also to rethink the very approach to interior space in a car.

The car’s official premiere is set for the end of this month. The new model was created in line with the “Living Space” interior concept promoted by Xiaomi, so it’s no longer just an SUV, but a smart, modular space on wheels. The model’s exterior has a solid, refined look, and the main feature of the front end is the signature LED headlights shaped like the Mi logo, which blend harmoniously with the closed front panel.

However, the main highlight was actually hidden inside. Premium family cars typically feature a six-seat 2-2-2 interior layout, but Xiaomi took a different approach. The SkyNomad N90 features a seven-seat 2-2-3 configuration. The company’s CEO, Lei Jun, emphasizes the practicality of this particular design. According to him, this layout is ideal both for a family of three traveling with “two sets” of grandparents and for a family with two children, a nanny, and an elderly relative.

The interior showcases modular engineering and modern technologies. The main feature is the front seats, which can rotate 180°, allowing the driver and front-seat passenger to turn to face other people in the cabin while the vehicle is parked. The second row features zero-gravity seats designed to ensure comfort during long trips. A multimedia screen is mounted to the ceiling and can be moved along the length of the cabin. Additional mounts for tablets are provided in the third row, along with a full-fledged projection system.

The SkyNomad N90 is quite large. It is 5,285 mm long, 1,825 mm high, 1,998 mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 3,080 mm. A vehicle of this size requires a suitable powertrain, so Xiaomi opted for a hybrid system with a range extender. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 112 kW of power, which does not directly propel the vehicle but functions as an electricity generator. Propulsion is provided by two electric motors with outputs of up to 210 kW (282 k.s.) and 100 kW (134 k.s.), respectively.

The electric motors are powered by a 76 kWh battery integrated into the chassis. Compared to the batteries in all-electric models, this capacity seems modest, but it’s sufficient for a hybrid system with a range extender. The car is expected to travel up to 370 km on electric power alone according to the WLTC cycle. In this way, Xiaomi aims to offer an alternative to all-electric models and alleviate drivers’ range anxiety during long family trips.

The company views the modern premium SUV as a scalable technological ecosystem on wheels. Its versatile interior allows it to compete with minivans, and the hybrid powertrain with a range extender makes the vehicle suitable for both business trips and large families. For traditional premium automakers, this could pose a serious challenge.
