It is safe to say that Mitsubishi loves the name Eclipse. Following the Eclipse Cross (its review is available on our website at this link), which has a lot in common with the Renault Scenic E-Tech, Mitsubishi has introduced the Eclipse Sportback model. And this is, in fact, a redesigned Nissan Leaf.

In collaboration with Alliance partner Nissan Motor, Mitsubishi plans to launch the new Eclipse Sportback electric vehicle in North America as a 2027 model in the second half of this year. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV is based on the highly publicized next-generation Nissan Leaf, but will feature a number of design elements that will distinguish it from its “relative” and emphasize its uniqueness.

This electric subcompact SUV combines sporty style with high environmental performance. The electric vehicle is designed for a variety of operating scenarios, both for daily travel and for leisure and outdoor activities. Mitsubishi Motors applied its own characteristic changes to the exterior design to emphasize the unique identity of the model. These elements include the front and rear bumpers, front grille, headlights and rear combination lights, tailgate, as well as the D-pillars and wheels.

The new Eclipse Sportback EV continues Mitsubishi’s electrification journey, which dates back to 1970, when the company first began developing all-electric vehicles in Japan. The world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, went on sale in select markets in 2009 and was launched in the United States and Canada in late 2011. A year later, the company introduced the Outlander PHEV, the world’s first SUV with a hybrid powertrain, which entered the North American market in 2018.

The Eclipse Sportback EV will be the next stage of Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 business plan, where electrification is one of four key areas along with updating and expanding the model range, modernizing the retail sales model and strengthening cooperation with the dealer network. The company has committed to introducing at least one new or significantly updated vehicle every year until the end of fiscal year 2030. In early 2027, the Eclipse Sportback will be joined by an all-new off-road version of the Outlander SUV, focused on off-road use.

The company has promised to reveal more information about the Eclipse Sportback EV in the near future, including specifications, pricing, and a sales start date.
