According to new leaks, the Sony PlayStation 6 may rely heavily on artificial intelligence to achieve higher performance without significantly increasing hardware costs. The tech giant has not yet confirmed any technical specifications, but the leaks suggest a focus on efficiency, image upscaling, and AI-powered rendering.

Insiders say that in developing the PlayStation 6, the developers are aiming for a stable gaming experience at 4K resolution with a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second.

But according to rumors, the console will not rely solely on the graphics processor’s computing power. The manufacturer will combine several software technologies, including AI-powered frame generation, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), and advanced ray-tracing optimization mechanisms. Together, these systems are expected to increase frame rates and image quality, while also reducing the load on the system’s physical components.

Insiders also say that Sony is prioritizing intelligent load balancing this time around. A built-in local real-time AI model will be able to perform tasks such as frame interpolation and image reconstruction. Thanks to this approach, the system will demonstrate a higher level of performance than what traditional rendering pipelines are capable of.
However, this strategy also comes with its own trade-offs. Running AI models directly on the console is expected to consume a portion of the system’s memory and computational resources. Therefore, the manufacturer will need to balance performance, cost, and technical limitations to ensure a stable gaming experience across different titles.

According to analysts, this approach will allow Sony to better control production costs. If the PlayStation 6 relies less on extremely expensive hardware, it will be able to maintain a competitive price compared to high-performance gaming PCs while still offering a premium gaming experience.

Judging by the leaks, the PlayStation 6 could mark a significant shift in the approach to achieving high console performance. This involves moving away from relying solely on hardware and adopting a hybrid model that combines AI, software optimizations, and traditional rendering. It’s worth noting that Sony has already begun moving in this direction with the launch of PSSR technology – its own solution based on AMD FSR, which enables image upscaling on the PS5 Pro.
At the same time, it may be too early to talk about the PlayStation 6 just yet, especially given the current crisis in the memory market. The console was previously expected to launch in 2027, but rumors now suggest that Sony may push back its launch until as late as the end of 2028. This is all due to the ongoing crisis in the hardware market.
