Following a wave of rumors that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 might be remastered, Treyarch decided to issue a brief statement explaining what is actually happening. Studio representatives announced that the original versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will be ported to the PlayStation 5 as early as next month. The American studio Iron Galaxy is handling the ports.

Treyarch announced this on its official Twitter page. The announcement did not specify what improvements the new versions will include or whether they can be considered full-fledged remasters. Instead, the studio simply noted that the original games “are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at IronGalaxy,” and added in the comments that “both versions will include Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies modes.”

For PS5 owners, this means they’ll soon be able to return to the two most popular games in the Call of Duty series. At the same time, the announcement leaves quite a few questions unanswered. In particular, it’s unclear why Xbox and PC are missing from the list of announced platforms – or at least why there are no enhanced versions for them.
Despite this, the news is further evidence that Microsoft continues to focus on older titles in the franchise. Following the announcement that Call of Duty: Vanguard would be coming to Xbox Game Pass, many speculated that classic games in the series would fill the gap instead of newer Call of Duty releases being added to the service on a regular basis. Many believe that remastered versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 may eventually be announced for the Xbox Series as well, and if that happens, they will most likely appear in the Game Pass catalog right away.

The addition of Vanguard and the confirmation of Black Ops ports indicate that Xbox is gradually expanding its library of classic Call of Duty games within the subscription service. After all, the company needs content from its own studios to fill the service, especially given reports of potential layoffs that could significantly reduce the Xbox Studios portfolio.
