ChatGPT has been integrated into the robotic pet Loona

Getting a pet is always a serious step and responsibility for the future owner or owners. It is necessary to weigh all the risks, from banal attention to important opportunities to provide high-quality and comprehensive care, be it food, toys, or an examination at the veterinarian. But getting a robotic pet is a completely different matter. Therefore, it is very important to understand the Loona robots theme with ChatGPT on board.

In 2021, a Kickstarter campaign was launched with the Loona robot project, a conditional pet. In 2023, they started sending them to customers. This is not the first such offer in the world, but what makes it stand out now is the ability to interact with users using ChatGPT. Of course, Loona will not write an article with news, and you need to proofread and question any materials even after the classic ChatGPT. Still, this favourite will be able to add interactivity.

Among the key features is a robot with a pleasant design, it helps to spend time interestingly because thanks to four microphones it hears how it is called and reacts to commands. Thanks to cameras and sensors, it can recognize not only the environment for manoeuvring, but also people, and also interacts with the owner. But more importantly, he knows how to play with people when they move. The robot can even recognize emotions, react accordingly, recognize gestures and express emotions on a 2.4-inch screen that looks like a digital face.

Of course, Loona has a bunch of sensors with the corresponding software, which helps not to fall from the stairs or something else high, not to crash into walls and other objects from the environment. But this is all to one degree or another in other solutions. It is worth noting that the product is developing dynamically, because at the beginning of the sale, it supported commands only in English, and at the moment 8 more languages have been added: Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Korean. As you can see, there is no Ukrainian yet. In the Kickstarter FAQ, it is stated that Loona cannot “talk”, because it imitates a pet, but about ChatGPT, it is indicated that the robot will help to learn many topics with its help, including biology, geography, different languages, etc. These nuances make it possible to understand that the product does not stand still, but adapts to the needs and realities of the market.

There isn’t much information on the ChatGPT integration on the manufacturer’s website, a few mentions of this AI and one of the pastimes shows that it can be used to learn other languages. It is written in a very general way that will help you prepare for a trip, create your recipe, talk to Socrates, check your luck and other points, but how it all works in reality and how convenient it is – you have to look at each case separately.

There is no point in writing a lot about the technical parameters of such an interesting gadget, except for autonomous operation, which in active use should be within two hours, after which Loona will go to recharge on a special platform. And yes, this robot does not run but rides on wheels. He knows how to recognize not only objects and people, but also the same dot from a laser, with which he can chase, and I am sure that the list is already larger and will continue to expand. On board, Loona has a powerful quad-core Cortex A53 for its class, a dual-core BPU 5 TOPS and a CortexM4 co-processor. Its key capabilities are tied to software that runs on AWS, and cloud capabilities on Amazon resources. It is important to clarify this because all key actions are tied to data transfer and autonomously without Internet access, this toy will have significantly fewer capabilities.

And where without an application to Loona? With its help, you can connect to the device, both directly nearby and remotely in FPV (first-person view) mode. There are already a lot of interesting games, judging by the videos about this toy and information from the manufacturer’s website, and there should be more in time. The website states that Loona can also work autonomously in the context of the application, but why pay $364 and not use all the features offered by the manufacturer?

Who might be interested in such a toy? Probably not for users in Ukraine, although it would be interesting to try. But in the USA, EU, Great Britain, Australia or New Zealand it is more than possible to try to get such a cute pet. More seriously, it can be such a safe pet for a family with children who dream of a small dog, but for some reason cannot get a live dog. It is also a very unusual way to keep in touch with the family if one of the family members wants to contact the loved ones with unusual options through the smartphone, namely through Loona. Of course, we do not rule out the option of such a “friend” for existing or future live pets to check how they feel at home while the owner or owners are away at work or somewhere. There are many options, and given the pace of development of this product, there will be even more scenarios. There are already many games for Loona, and if this toy becomes more popular, the number of games and other opportunities for interaction will increase.
