Owners of the new Nintendo Switch 2 have begun reporting widespread overheating issues, leading to crashes and freezes across a range of games – from demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 to lighter ones such as Pokémon and Splatoon. Most complaints are coming from Japan, where users on platform X describe the console’s fans running at full speed before the system freezes or forcibly shuts down the game.

Some users report that the console becomes too hot to hold comfortably, especially in handheld mode. Owners are also experiencing issues while using the device in docked mode – specifically, there are multiple reports of Cyberpunk 2077 crashing despite active cooling. One player mentioned that the system entered sleep mode twice due to overheating while playing Tears of the Kingdom.

Users outside of Japan have also reported overheating issues. On platforms like Reddit and Facebook, players mention that the Switch 2’s casing becomes “very warm” or even “hot” to the touch after extended play sessions. In an official statement, Nintendo recommends basic troubleshooting steps: unplug the console, place it in a well-ventilated area, and ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked. If these measures don’t resolve the issue, users are advised to contact a service center.

While the issue has not yet reached critical levels, it is raising concerns. Independent thermal tests showed the Switch 2’s casing reaching temperatures of up to 47 °C in docked mode and around 39 °C in handheld mode. Despite this, the new console launched with record-breaking sales, surpassing previous Nintendo models during the opening weekend. Demand has been so high that the company’s president apologized for shortages. However, the launch has not been without problems – besides technical issues, some users have reported account suspensions linked to the use of third-party flash drives.

Nintendo has not yet commented on the possibility of a broader firmware update or hardware revision to address the overheating issues.
