After the release of Forza Horizon 6 on May 19, an artificial driver named Bowie Knife99 became the main villain of the game. This virtual racer is not a creation of real gamers, as it was developed by Playground Games. The team of authors included additional AI drivers in the Forza Horizon 6 code that function outside the standard driver system, and Bowie Knife99 became the most controversial among them.
Dozens of insanely popular videos are circulating on the web, where Bowie Knife99 ruthlessly pushes opponents off the track, sometimes literally lands on their roofs from above, and sometimes manages to win races in a straight line while driving a regular tricycle. The official Xbox account joined the discussion of this anomaly. Their initiative was picked up by the pages of Battlefield, HITMAN, Resident Evil, and Cyberpunk.
Numerous viral videos show Bowie Knife99 ramming rival cars right in the middle of the race, taking first place and leading the race in vehicles that are a priori incapable of competing – in one episode, a mediocre Honda overtakes the legendary Mazda 787B. Due to this behavior, the driver has been dubbed a kind of “Wario version of Let Me Solo Her” in the world of Forza Horizon 6, and the thematic forums are full of messages from players who unite to fight this bot and at the same time mock each other’s unsuccessful attempts to defeat it.
The social network Reddit, in particular the Forza subreddit, is flooded with memes, and many users have set out to take revenge on the offender by throwing him off the track and driving him into the bumpers, even if it ruins their own results in the race. This computer character wreaks havoc with two main features: the extremely aggressive way he rams subscribers during races and the unfathomable speed in cars that should be lagging behind. The corporate profiles of Xbox, Battlefield, HITMAN, Resident Evil, and Cyberpunk brands also supported the spread of this meme on social media.
The principles of driving and the uniqueness of this case are as follows. Forza Horizon 6 races involve AI drivers that fill the starting grid, and most of them have the names of real gamers, game authors, or popular bloggers. Their training process is based on the analysis of real people’s driving data: if a person drives roughly, their digital counterpart will act in a similar way. Light collisions, skids, and overtaking maneuvers are considered standard elements of the game.
Bowie Knife99, however, behaves quite differently. During online competitions or in single-player modes, it finds itself at almost every intersection, which has led to an unprecedented failure in the algorithms in the history of the six-part Forza Horizon series. The fierce ramming, unrealistic pace on ridiculous vehicles, and absolute leadership on any off-road terrain indicate that something went radically wrong in the process of preparing and collecting data for this particular driver, or, conversely, worked too perfectly.
The case of the three-wheeled vehicles has become the most famous. The popular video (above) shows Bowie Knife99 confidently overtaking some of the fastest supercars on the planet in a sprint on a straight line while driving a three-wheeler. One of the drivers wrote that he was completely confident of his victory in the drag race until the camera turned around and showed him losing to the three-wheeler. This video became the main symbol of the Bowie Knife99 era of dominance.
Acts of lynching from the gaming community look large-scale. Users are massively knocking Bowie Knife99 off its trajectory, pushing it into walls and kicking it to the curb, doing everything possible to prevent the bot from finishing first, despite losing their own positions. The slogan “Justice for all Bowie Knife victims” has become the main motto of gamers. Some people publish special videos with their successful retaliatory attacks. At the same time, other players warn that Bowie Knife99 will definitely launch a counterattack if you show excessive aggression towards it. This is how Forza Horizon 6 got its first real living legend, which emerged just a week after the official release.
