Director Takashi Yamazaki has already cemented his status as a cinematic legend. After decades of successful work in Japan, he gained worldwide recognition in 2023 with his film Godzilla: Minus One, which won him an Oscar for visual effects, making him the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win this award.

His triumph has opened up many prospects for him: he is known to be interested in Star Wars projects, and at the end of this year, the sequel to his monster hit, Godzilla: Minus Zero”.
However, the next stage of Yamazaki’s career promises to be even more exciting. At CinemaCon 2026, Sony Pictures announced his debut English-language film, Grandgear. The film is produced by J.J. Abrams and is scheduled for release on February 18, 2028. Although the premiere is almost two years away, a short teaser confirmed the main theme of the upcoming action movie – the battle of giant robots.

The released video showed an elegant robot, reminiscent of the Gandam style, preparing for a battle on a city street. Its rival is another metal machine, whose appearance has alien features (the robot’s head looks like the head of an Amani alien from Star Wars). In the frame, two giants collide in motion, with one of them knocking a massive cannon out of the other’s hands. In slow motion, the weapon flies backwards, falling to the pavement and shattering the car.
It is not yet known whether this was footage from the final version of the movie or just a proof of concept. The cast and plot details also remain a mystery. However, the combination of the efforts of Oscar-winning Takashi Yamazaki as writer and director and J.J. Abrams as producer in creating a movie about combat robots for Sony is already causing a lot of excitement. The very name Grandgear only heightens expectations for this ambitious project.
