Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO, Lenovo, Honor and other smartphone manufacturers that are part of the Chinese Gold Standard Alliance have taken on one of Android’s oldest problems – unstable performance. The alliance has announced a new line of work aimed at reducing lag, overheating, and unexpected app crashes on Android devices.
The association members said that they will soon introduce a unified memory management standard for developers that will be consistent with the changes planned for Android 17. The goal of the initiative is to ensure that applications use memory more responsibly, regardless of which Android smartphone they are running on.

Today, there is no such consistency. As the complexity of applications grows, so do their memory requirements, and the differences between Android shells and hardware platforms make optimization difficult. According to the alliance, this leads to higher development costs, longer testing cycles, and ultimately a poorer user experience. Specific manifestations of the problem include forced termination of background processes, case heating, and a gradual decrease in performance over time.
Google has already started working on its part. As part of Android 17, the system will introduce clearer restrictions on memory usage depending on the total amount of RAM of the device, and will also target edge cases, including memory leaks. The Alliance is actually building its own system on top of these changes, called the “fair memory management mechanism.”

The initiative consists of three components. The first is a single standard that defines the allowable amount of memory for applications. The second is an intelligent notification system that warns applications in advance of a lack of resources, allowing them to free up memory on their own before the system intervenes. The third is a set of contextual rules that govern when and how such notifications appear.
Developers have until June 30, 2026 to adapt their applications. Each member company has committed to providing documentation and technical support to facilitate the transition. The Gold Standard Alliance is a non-profit organization founded in 2021 by companies such as Lenovo, along with leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers. The alliance also runs a certification program that recognizes apps that meet performance, stability, and efficiency standards in member app stores.
